Which is more true?   Do politicians not care at all about people being shot and need a scolding and to be called out because they are bought?   Or is there a  genuine disagreement due to how different people view guns in America, and the complexities involved in regulating this?

I voted option 2, but both are true.

Other: the hostile far-right takeovers of the NRA, the Republican Party, Supreme Court jurisprudence...

Plus, guns are weapons, and selling weapons is good for business, especially in times of perpetual war around the globe. Why do you think the US is at the center of the global arms trade?

This is the product of a hyper-capitalist global economy, centered in the only advanced industrial country where many powerful political actors and yes, a disturbingly large segment of the overall population are willing to let many thousands (or rather, millions, if we're talking about the US-led global arms trade) of people die every year. Because some abstract fantasy hypothetical of "taking up arms against the tyrannical US government" and weapons manufacturers' profits trump people's lives. Very sad.
