Of all the Christian seasons, this one appeals to me the most, even if I can't keep it up for long.

The Coptic Oriental tradition of Great Lent seems severe, and I think, a reason why Christianity in Egypt declined so steadily through the years. The schedule of fasts overall seems much harder to keep up than Ramadan.

Gave up beer and liquor for Lent. Leaves the door open for wine though. #sheeeeesh

I go vegetarian for Lent, but take advantage of the fact that Sundays are of Lent, rather than in Lent.

For the first time, I am taking it seriously. I have decided to give up a few food/drink items. It's not easy.

Obviously, it's never commanded in the Bible, but fasting is still mentioned.  I'm trying to give up burgers and possibly ice cream, but will still eat ground beef in other things (spaghetti sauce, chili, etc.)

Trying. I’ve failed twice so far.
I thought you were Catholic.

And I missed mass several times during undergrad, too.

Gave up buying coffee for Lent.  This is very hard for me.  I caved on Friday but will do better this week God willing.

Also going to Mass every Sunday for Lent, and hopefully beyond that.

I gave up all sweets (baked treats, candy, ice cream etc)  for lent. So far, I haven't cheated once, but I've been very tempted; I suppose that's the whole purpose. Smiley

I gave up snacks (eating that isn't part of breakfast, lunch, or supper) and sweets (whatever I'd consider to be a desert food). I made it through the first four days, which is usually the hardest part. I'm scheduled to work night shift during the second half of Lent, so the resolutions may be tougher then; I'm not really sure how that's going to go.

There have been a number of years I haven't given anything up since it seemed too childish to me for awhile, but I'm back at it as I understand the real meaning better and since I had one super productive year losing soda addiction in college. I don't eat very much (only 3 meals since Ash Wednesday though that's unusually low), so I am determined to give up "excessive sleeping" qualified as my sad self lying in bed for 45 minutes half conscious each morning. Aiming to get to out of bed before 8:50 and ideally by 8:15 on weekdays (and definitely not sleep until 11 on weekends! More like 9:30 then). Mixing health improvement with "giving up" guilty pleasure. Unique so let's see how it goes.

One of the priests at my church back in Wisconsin would always tell people to give up hitting the snooze button but to instead immediately get out of bed and spend the first minute awake praying. I don't do that myself, but it's an interesting suggestion.

Yes, that is the correct terminology. But how?

Not Catholic so I never have “celebrated” Lent in that way, except for church during Easter/Good Friday.

When I was growing up in the 60's and 70's the pressure to recognize Catholic traditions in secular organizations was strong enough that the public school lunchrooms served fish every Friday during Lent, and that was in a suburban area with more Protestants than Catholics.

You should seriously reconsider. Lent is a great and ancient tradition.
