This is the official thread for updates on Linda Belcher, the sassy old blue-dog running to reclaim her seat in KY HD-49. The election is on 2/20.

She lost by just 1 point in 2016 to crazy guy Dan Johnson. Dan Johnson killed himself after reports emerged alleging molestation and sexual assault of young girls and women appeared in the Kentucky media. Now his widow, Rebecca Johnson, is the Republican candidate for the seat.
Here's that story: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/12/14/a-lawmaker-accused-of-molesting-a-teen-killed-himself-his-widow-calls-it-a-high-tech-lynching/

Here's her campaign site, as you can see she is very popular on facebook:

https://lindaforky.com/
https://www.facebook.com/LindaLHBelcher/

Andy Beshear and Alison Lundergan-Grimes have campaigned for her, and it appears the full KY Dem apparatus is being used.

I live in the adjoining district. There's a debate tomorrow put on by the high school, but Johnson has made it pretty clear she won't be there. Belcher should be.

I really hope she wins this, but I won't have the knot out of my stomach until it's official. This one is for the soul of my commonwealth.

Is Rebecca Johnson even running a campaign? Or is she just staying home banking a win on BELCHER IS LIBRUL ABORTION mailers.

72-23 Trump. I don't have sen numbers, but probably something like 65-35 Paul. Queen Linda only lost her house race 50.5-49.5 though.

I drive through the district every day, but via highway. I haven't seen or heard a thing. Belcher is mobilizing the Dem's from hers and surrounding districts. I hope it's a blowout, but like I said, I'll have a knot in my stomach until it's over.

I didn't even know that this wasn't the first time she had lost:

Those old Blue Dog Dems: making KY more Democratic in midterms than in presidential elections!

And for those who were wondering:

KY-49:
Trump 72.3%
Clinton 23.3%

Her loss was almost certainly because of Trump’s coattails (and, in 2012, anti-Obama sentiment).

It's a really weird district to be competitive. This is not a traditionally Democratic part of Kentucky at all; it's middle-income suburbs of Louisville, not a coalfield. It voted for Bob Dole in 1996. I suppose Linda Belcher must be a very strong candidate with the local connections to win over many Republicans, but she gets overwhelmed in Presidential years when more partisan, lower information voters make their appearance. Not specific to Trump or Obama (or Clinton or Romney) in that sense.

Thank you Kentucky for closing your polls early, which is 3pm here.

Why is the main special election thread closed?
