All of them were pretty bad, but I'm somewhat fond of the myth of Gladstone.

It also turns out that he sounded exactly how you always wish the 19th century to have sounded.

There's something inherently funny about a sitting prime minister devoting most of his time either to chopping down trees by day or lecturing prostitutes by night.

The Liberal icon that launched his career as an MP from a rotten borough whose maiden speech was a defense of the Atlantic slave trade.

write in: Sir Stanley Argyle

I feel sorry for the bloke. He was shafted after the 1935 election by Labor's decision to give the Country Party supply for a minority government.

I haven't looked this up, but I'm guessing this is the wrong "Victoria".  And I'm guessing he would have been more premier than PM.

Amusing, nonetheless.

or for that matter the Conservative icon that launched his career by publishing terrible romantic novels (yes, truly Louise Bagshawe/Mensch is the true heir to Disraeli)

My favorite part about Disraeli's early writing career was that he tried very, very hard to make it look like a work of an "insider" to the high society, which was then laughed at.

Dennis Potter wanted to do a TV play or even a serial about that - provisional title 'Prostitute Reformer' - but none of the networks were exactly keen.

Despite being a Conservative I like Disraeli, but I don't know enough about Victorian Era politics to give an opinion on most these guys.
