The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, supported by 56% of Democrats and 63% of the general public, failed to overcome a filibuster in the Senate because only three Democrats broke party ranks (Manchin, Donnelly, and Casey).  Two Republicans (Collins and Murkowski) also voted against the legislation supported by 73% of Republicans.

It actually seems like a good idea – the bill itself needs to be amended, though.

Yes, white liberals are in control of the Democratic Party, this isn't really a surprise.

Maybe they should say they'll support it in favor of nationwide ending of the death penalty, call it the "ultimate pro life compromise". Then again the GOP won't take it, they love spilling blood of the already living.

I'm more outraged that the Democrats caved over dreamers which have over 80% popularity with Americans.

The majority in the Senate and the President opposed the bill for Dreamers, and there's a limit to what the minority can do. By the same token, Cruz "caved" over convincing Obama to repeal Obamacare.

They caved and it's obvious that they did. Just like they caved in 2013 with the gun control issue when they had 9 out of 10 Americans on their side. You can deny it all you want but voters, especially dreamers are currently pissed off. I don't think the best thing to do is to tell them that they are wrong and the Democrats never gave up on the dreamers, when they did.

The expectation was that Democrats should have kept the government shut down indefinitely. I think I read something on DK that suggested that if Democrats kept it shut down long enough, Republicans would cave. "Long enough" is up to each person, obviously. It's really easy for partisans to look at Congress and say "if they just did x, we'd get y," not understanding that things aren't that simple.

I really wish people would stop insisting their party shut down the government every time they want to pass something that the other party won't agree on. One day it's dreamers, and the next day it's something else. There are too many interest groups who all have policy they consider crucial and shutdown-worthy. And in fact the worst thing that could happen is us shutting down the govt for something, only to have the Republicans cave. Then it would open the flood gates, and everyone would expect the govt to be shut down to get what they want.

The best part is that a Senator from Alabama voted against this bill. Isn't it fantastic that Jones managed to defeat the horrible Moore?
