Joining the likes of Manchin, Heitkamp, Donelley and McCaskill in voting for Trump's short term spending bill, and not for principle or in support of Dreamers. Is Dopey Doug trying to win over the white Alabamans who eagerly supported an accused pedophile over him? If Dopey Doug keeps this up, black and latino voters will stay home and he'll lose badly in 2020.

Doug Jones won because of the fact that he got 30% of the white vote instead of 15%. He DID NOT win because the black share of the vote went up from 28% to 29%. (in comparison to Obama's 2012 results)

The base won't hold this against him, but white Alabamians might. He needed some whites, especially college-educated whites, to win and he'll need them again in 2020.

And you think he'd win 30% of the white vote if he goes against a normal Republican in 2020?

He has every right to do so.

He could sell it as common-sense problem-solving down in AL.

At least he has a chance if he votes like Blue Dog and not like a firebrand liberal. In addition, this vote didn't matter, so it was more or less a symbolic gesture for his home state

Doug Jones campaigned on being bipartisan and working together, so obviously he is going to vote in a mostly centrist way.

Generally politicians try to behave/vote like they campaign.

Jones should vote like the "liberal stooge" Trump labeled him as and not with Trump in a protest vote against the Democrats.

If lefties want to promote the enactment of liberal policies then they should leave Jones, Manchin and Heitkamp alone, and instead focus their energies into defeating the IDC turncoats at New York.

Voting for cloture on the CR is a free vote for Doug Jones as it is for Donnelly and others.

He's a Democratic senator from what is basically Republican Mordor. Cut him some slack.

What? White Alabamians would probably be more likely to vote for him if he votes like a centrist.

White Alabamians vote on party lines, they don't care if Dopey Doug votes like a Blue Dog, they'll see him as a Schumer controlled-liberal nonetheless.

None of this matters. Jones is casting this vote to close off an avenue of attack from his potential opponents.

Get back to me when:

-he says he’s pro-life
-starts voting like Zell Miller

If Jones votes like Zell Miller, then we can talk. Right now, I view him as pretty liberal for AL - supports public option, pro-choice, said helthcare is a right, ect.

I don't remember Scott Brown doing such a thing.

Because Republicans understand power and knew to treat Brown’s Senate win like the fluke it was. I don’t remember Brown vowing to unions or speaking centrist on budgets and taxes.

Doug Jones will almost certainly not win re-election. If he is a true progressive, he should ditch the moderation and try to help the horribly oppressed people in his state like he promised to. Anything less is a waste of the capabilities of his seat and the good fortunes of his win.

I suppose if you are correct on this, it would make sense for Jones to make uninhibited votes. However, just because you think this doesn't mean Jones or the people advising him do. It's not impossible for Democrats who barely win a statewide race in deeply Republican states to win reelection, although it happens more on the state level than federal. In this case, Jones may think he has a shot at winning again in 2020, whether it's because Trump goes down in flames and brings Republicans with him, and/or because Jones could successfully build a winning brand for himself.

Point is, maybe you're right, or maybe you're wrong, but for the time being, there is no reason to think your logic is any better than that of Jones.

So since Jones will "almost certainly" not win, he should indulge in meaningless gestures that will guarantee that he doesn't win? Okay.

1. He campaigned on bipartisanship

2. His vote didn't count for anything when they weren't close to 60.
