When Tony Blair was the British Prime Minister (1997-2007), he was the favorite left-wing leader of the right. Always when the right wanted to criticize some left-wing leader, it used to say "unfortunately he is not a good leftist like Tony Blair".
Nowadays, Angela Merkel is the favorite right-wing leader of the left. Always when the left wants to criticize some right-wing leader, it says "unfortunately he is not a good rightist like Angela Merkel".

This is an interesting take. Are there any other politicians who fit this kind of bill that anyone can think of?

I could see Macron eventually becoming this for either side.

Definitely true. Merkel and Blair are both pretty centrist, so their views are closer to each other than say Blair to Jeremy Corbyn.

McCain and Romney had huge Democratic fan clubs until they were actually on a ballot.

I don't think anyone in Britain considers Blair to be leftwing... quite the opposite!

Remember, in Merkel's first election she presented herself as a hardcore Thatcherite.
