Governor Ige is being primaried by Honolulu Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa in the 2018 election. The false missile alert in Hawaii has become a major campign issue and Ige is being blamed for the series of failures that lead to the false alert and slow 38 minute retraction period.

Ige was probably going to lose before this, this just seals it.

I guess she didn’t learn from her primary challenge to Schatz.

Yes, women have to learn their place and yield to men.

Hanabusa is going to curbstomp Ige, his recent blunders have only made it even more likely, and may even force him to retire.

Hawaii seems to hate its governors. I wouldn't be surprised if Hanabusa wins this by 2014 Ige-Abercrombie margins.

The question is, will Republicans run an actual candidate or will they be stuck with John Carroll?

Oh, please. The sarcasm would be warranted in any other circumstance, but Hanabusa's attempts at higher office have all been based on unabashed entitlement. Gabbard would be more deserving, and I say that as someone who thinks Gabbard is a total phony.

Isn’t that the same for any politician? You just feel that way because she’s a minority woman seeking higher office.

Oh, we're playing this game, are we? Explain to me, then, why I back Vilela and Ortiz-Jones for Congress and why I did the same for Kamala Harris and Donna Edwards last year. Also, this "minority woman" stuff is fine talk coming from someone who I suspect is white.

Let's leave the accusations at the door, shall we? Women and minorities are just as capable of terrible opportunism as the likes of Danny Tarkanian and Martha McSally.

I mean, yes, Hanabusa's senate campaign was based on an idea of entitlement to the seat due to Inouye's personal preference, but I don't see any evidence or reason to say that her gubernatorial campaign shares a similar chord.

David Ige has been criticized ever since he was elected for not providing Hawaii the type of leadership it deserves, and Hanabusa thought she would do a better job. All politicians are opportunists, but it’s usually women who are lobbed that insult. It takes a pretty large amount of self-confidence and entitlement to run for higher elected office in the first place, so accusing any politician of opportunism is pretty redundant.

I never said it was, opportunism is a common term used to put down and shame women for seeking elected office though.

But aren't all serious politicians really opportunists at the core?

Hanabusa is an opportunist seeking to (probably successfully) unseat an unpopular governor. Ige was an opportunist in 2014 when he did the same.

In a bid to cool the temperature in this thread, I'll say this: I fully agree that Ige sucks. He's a dud, just the same as Abercrombie. I just think that there are better candidates - and yes, better female candidates - who might run to replace him. I just don't think Hanabusa will be any better.

At this rate, I support Wendell Kaehuaea, but will reluctantly support the nominee (near 100% it will be Hanabusa).

What the hell does a fake missile alert have to do with the governor? That's a federal NORAD problem, no?

What the hell does a fake missile alert have to do with the governor? That's a federal NORAD problem, no?

It was sent out by a department of the state of Hawaii. State officials mistakenly thought they needed federal permission to retract the missile warning, when they didn’t need it, causing the missile alert to remain in place much longer than needed.

His response was criticized because he gave a very disappointing speech and let figures like Tulsi Gabbard show more leadership than him, when she alerted citizens that it was a false alarm 30 minutes before it was actually retracted. The state’s incompetency caused the entire fiasco, and as the state executive, Ige is being blamed for the numerous blunders that led to it.

Abercrombie was very unpopular and Hawaii replaces him with an unknown state legislator who turned out to be a very ineffectual leader. It’s bound to happen with a single-party state, especially one where personalities matter more than idealogy most of the time.
