As a resident of the suburbs, it's funny when Democrats say "we need to appeal to the less-racist suburban voters"

You know what's more funny? That Democratic candidates who appealed to these voters won their races, even when nobody believed they would (Virginia, Alabama).

Worked great in Georgia- 06 too, especially the 2nd time with $30 million tossed aside.

You got me. If only Democrats ran a socialist in that district, he would have won in a landslide.

Btw, the precious "WWC males" will still overwhelmingly support Lyin Ryan who wants to cut their Medicare and Social Security to give more tax cuts to their bosses in order to make a stand against black people kneeling and transgender people taking a piss, regardless of  how "folksy" and "blue collar" and "populist" Mr. "Iron Stache" is.

I'm a member of the WWC. I interact with fellow WWCrs all the time. There is basically nothing Democrats can do to expand their margins among this group without selling out on social issues. Instead, we should be focusing on turning out minorities - then following though on our promises to them instead of just using them for their votes once every two or four years.

Which group had massive swings against the racist pedophile? White educated suburbanites or the "white working class?"

Which group had massive swings against Ed Gillespie's race baiting campaign? White educated suburbanites or the "white working class?"

It's pretty clear why Bernie bros are so hostile to college educated suburbanites. They are not exactly a Sanders-friendly group and if they become part of the Democratic base then far-lefties like him become more or less as irrelevant as the Blue Dogs and the DLCers.
Of course to appeal to WWC the Democratic party must throw under the bus blacks, Hispanics, gays and women, but I have a hunch that this is a sacrifice Bernie cultists are very much willing to make.

On top of that, I doubt Democrats would gain significant appeal to this group even if they DID throw all those groups under the bus, since they'd probably just (correctly) view it as pandering and would know deep down the Democrats are still an anti-white hate group at heart, lol. This is about as good of a strategy as the idea that Republicans should throw ~90% of their voters under the bus for the sake of appealing to a few small groups that they might not even win anyway!

I get why some on the left don't like the shift to suburbanites, but I really don't buy into this idea that they won't follow along with a leftwards shift of economic policy. This is not really how people are influenced by politics. If they are becoming Democrats, they will take their cues from the party just like working class whites do from the GOP. Sure, if you raise taxes to like 80%, I'm sure the party will feel a lot of pain, but that's not likely going to happen.

Also, the suburbs are changing. This is not all based on people switching party loyalties. It may even be mostly an evolution of the suburbs rather than mass defections. As Millennials branch out and start families, and as the nation becomes less white, the suburbs become less Republican.

Yes, the dirty secret is that voters tend to be shaped by their party over time. You'll find plenty of former "populist" Democrats in West Virginia who are now stalwarts against government and wholeheartedly believe in trickle down economics and the virtues of billionaires, despite initially switching parties over social issues and muh coal. Similarly, you'll find plenty of formerly "fiscally conservative and socially liberal" Republicans in Delaware and Chester Counties who initially switched parties over the GOP's intolerance and pandering to Southern evangelicals yet now support single payer and higher taxes on the wealthy.

I like how people on this thread are saying the democrats need to appeal to minorites instead of the WWC, implying that minorites are a monolith group who apparently are hyper focused on social issues and on those social issues they all possess extremely liberal beliefs.

Minorities are voting as a monolith for a simple reason: because one of the two major parties wants to return to the era of Jim Crow and the Chinese Exclusion Act.

It is the "WWC" that is obsessed with "social issues" like black people kneeling and transgender people taking a piss.

Yes but it's funny how the white liberals seem to think minorites are also obsessed with social issues as well, and that if they focus on these issues they will jack up turnout from this group, despite trying this in 2016 and completely failing.

Yes. He's unquestionably the underdog in a race against Ryan, but he's the best 2018 recruit by Democrats so far.

If a deadbeat dad is the best recruit Democrats have in 2018, then I'm very worried for the future.

Read the post above yours. He paid off his delinquent child support just in time to run for Congress. What a swell guy!

I'll take him over the guy who is robbing the young, the old, the sick, and the poor to give rich pricks a giant tax cut.

Who said that? One, I am black. Two, I’m sure the posters here recognize black voters are just as concerned with education, healthcare, jobs, Social Security, National security, and infrastructure as any other group. What can’t be ignored is that our existence is inherently political and there are disparities in criminal justice and other institutions in this country that will disproportionately affect us because of our SOCIAL status. Issues that you think are being portrayed as “obsession” of social issues are the same issues that concern everyone else— but most blacks in this country don’t have the luxury of separating their race from said issues.

And yes if they focus on these issues they will do better if they actually do something about it when they get elected. They also need to allocate more funding to black candidates, black focus groups, organizations that focus on black civic participation, and a host of other initiatives. The Democrats need to stop treating black voters like a bastard child they don't want.

To win over people won by Obama twice or even once, necessary in order for the Democrats to form a governing coalition because of the composition of the Senate, you won't need to throw minorities under the bus. They just need to shed the image of being a party of coastal elites who shame voters into vote for them rather than talking about real economic problems. Obama to a large extent contrasted the differences between him and Romney, hitting him hard on Bain Capital, although his success was also aided by the fact he was from the Midwest.

Amirite bro?

No, but they could've saved that money and thrown Rob Quist over the top (who btw, won the Election Day vote and would've held on with the Early Vote with a little more funding), or hell maybe even Thompson in Kansas.  That's two districts that could've been saved by all that money.

Who are they? Ossoff got his money from direct donations to his campaign.
Are you going to chastise his small donors?

Evidence? I remember tracking the Yellowstone and Missoula County results throughout the entire night and Quist's numbers really didn't improve at all (in those two counties, at least) even as the election day vote came in.

this sort of nonsense rhetoric is incredibly offensive to black progressives like myself, and your attempt at erasing the majority of POC under 40 who voted for Sanders is sickening.

Well since that was based on the whole 2/3s already mailed in, followed by the margin being better than expected, and was a 6 point difference narrowed down to 5-something...

Touche.

Oh no, don't worry. The Blue Dogs and DLCers will be happy to throw minorities under the bus whenever it's convenient.

At least those "Berniebros" support policies that actually benefit POC instead of deadend centrists who say they want a "national conversation on race" and then do nothing for POC politically.
