Good riddance he’s probably retiring because he would’ve lost the primary.

This is the third (fourth? if counting Murphy) PA retirement- all Rs- Dent, Barletta, and now Schuster. I hope Kelly retires as well.

This district isn't even remotely competitive.

What about after the new maps are drawn

Either way more retirements are good. It's a sign of realignments and/or waves

Naw shuster is retiring because he barely won his primary in 2016 so instead of go though with a possible close election it’s easier to just retire.

Art Halvorson might run again, for the Republicans this time.

There is a slight possibility that you could get second competitive district in SWPA, but it would not include almost any part of this district.

Whatever happens, there is a safe R district in this part of PA.

Even if the map gets redrawn, this seat is and always will be safe R - too much of the Appalachian 'T' in the seat. What is interesting is if the map gets redrawn, how the new district angles. It could be a purely SWPA seat, Mid-West PA, or Appalachia based seat. Any of these scenarios leads to a safe R result, but could lead to a variety of different personalities running for the Pub Primary.

Shuster makes 26 Republicans retiring this cycle, which now exceeds the total for all cycles going back to 2000 except for 2008. (Bridenstine may or not be counted bc of his NASA nomination; Wikipedia can't seem to make up its mind if that counts as a retirement or not).
We have now exceeded the total number of retirements from 2006, 2008 and 2010, equaled the total number from 2012, and are 1 short of 2014 and 3 short of 2016. This is as of two days into the election year.
