Koalas block traffic with mid-road wrestling match
Traffic stopped in both directions on an Australian road due to an unusual and adorable road hazard -- a pair of wrestling koalas.
A motorcyclist going the other direction eventually drives around the koalas, but the car filming the marsupials stays put.

The phrase in red looks very simple other than the use of marsupials to mean koalas. One could add the words "which is" after "car", but that's considered bad journalistic form as it uses extra words that don't improve the clarity of the phrase. Is there something else specific in the structure that makes it hard?

The car filming the koalas did not move.

Someone in a car is filming the koalas with a videocamera of some kind, and this car isn't going anywhere.  The whole sentence is very poorly written though.

Why do say that? I read it as clear journalistic style, the kind most editors would approve.

"A motorcycle going the other direction" - the other direction from what?
"..but the car filming the marsupials"  The car ? As there is no prior reference to this car, shouldn't it be a car?  And talking about a car filming something is confusing. Isn't it just a person in the car doing the filming? Or is this car somehow rigged up to film things like one of the google map cars?
Also this sentence is in present tense whereas the previous sentence was in past tense, but there is no suggestion of a change in time frame.

As one with personal experience with AP Style, the journalistic style of writing, I can say that the sentence is fairly well-written, however, it should not be written in the present tense (motorcycle eventually drove instead of motorcycle eventually drives), and the double hyphen is not needed. A colon could be used instead.

If that is considered correct AP Style, no wonder newspapers are in trouble!

It's not:

Also, the sentence is written very simply. I assume this is not from a primary English-language news source.
