I assume that his VP would take over? Or is he implicated too?

Peru has two VPs and from what I read so far the first one is considered likely to decline the honor.

(Fun fact: Iran has dozens of Vice Presidents, but aside of the "First Vice President" they are pretty much ministers w/o regular portfolios.)

I do find it interesting that neither of the two main candidates for president in the election that elected PPK were Latin American at all, in terms of ancestry.

Keiko Fujimori is involved also.

The VP of Peru has literally no duty other than to replace the President, so why did he sign on for the job then?

I think the veep has a separate corruption case against him.

It's hilarious how many people are implicated at the moment - i think every single living president (PPK, Humala, Garcia, Toledo and the Fujimori dynasty) is being charged with something.

The proposed impeachment vote was held today, with 79 votes in favor, 19 against and 21 abstentions. With impeachment requiring 87 votes to pass, Kuczynski survives to fight another day.

He signed up to replace the president if he dies or resigns of his own will. He thinks the impeachment is unjust so he wouldn't take a role in it.

Looks like Kenji saved PPK-- for now. The expected price is that Alberto Fujimori will now be pardoned. A bitter irony ,for Keiko repeatedly asserted that she would not pardon her father if elected, but it looks like he now will be anyway.

Fujimori has been pardoned. As classic an example of a Faustian bargain as you will ever find in politics.

It seems if part of the reason why Keiko Fujimori was running was to get her dad out of jail she achieved that goal by losing.  In fact if she had won it was less likely that Alberto Fujimori would be pardoned.

Having been caught in a second impeachment attempt, and following a massive scandal (involving a video which shows Kenji Fujimori and company trying to buy votes for PPK) which all but guaranteed defeat at tomorrow's vote, Kuczynski has resigned the Presidency.

So if somehow Kenji Fujimori avoids jail I guess he will run against his sister Keiko Fujimori in 2021.  It will be pretty cool if we get to a brother-sister runoff.

Is there going to be a special election? I remember reading that one would be needed during the last round of impeachment talks. And if so, is Veronika Mendoza still around? She got pretty close to the runoff last time and given the events of the past 2 years I'd imagine her chances would be much better this time...

So I'm guessing Keiko Fujimori is going to make a "I told ya so" 2021 campaign?

With very superficial understanding I do not think so.  I think the 2001 election was more about "well the 2000 election was illegal since Fujimori should not been even allowed to run for re-election so lets do 2000 over again."  This time there is no concern that PPK's election in 2016 was illegitimate only that all sorts of things came out about him after his election which means he has to go.  I just will assume that the Vice Prez will take over and go on until 2021.  Question here is the Vice Prez Martín Vizcarra allowed to run in 2021.  I guess so since the issue is with re-election which he was not elected Prez in 2016.

yes, she has launched her own split from FA (from the Right) called New Peru.
