I imagine she'll be getting a pretty strong primary challenger now. You can't make a gaffe like that in this environment and survive.

I bet she’d retire if her primary gets tough.

Hopefully this increases the chances of another woman inheriting her seat.

The previous threads are a ridiculous cacaphony of why I am not a Democrat.

Marcy Kaptur has been one of the most pro-working class liberals in Congress since 1982.  And she's a LIBERAL.  She's not a conservative Democrat; she's a Catholic with a Catholic perspective on most things, including workplace justice and labor issues.

https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/2017/12/13/ohio-rep-marcy-kaptur-under-no-circumstances-victims-fault-if-theyre-harassed/950019001/

Had Marcy Kaptur been the Democratic nominee in 2016, I would have supported her over Trump.  She is one of the most substantial legislators among Democrats in Congress.  The whole of her record is admirable.  Yet folks here are excoriating her for a statement that (A) is taken out of context, and that (B) in a real world context, is not the ridiculous statement it is made out to be.  Kaptur, to be sure, clearly does not believe that suggestive clothing provides a sexual harasser or a sexual perpetrator with a mitigating factor or a defense.  People, men and women alike, wear suggestive clothing precisely to be attractive to others and to be noticed.  What people can't control when they choose to dress that way is who will notice them and give them attention.  Ms. Kaptur's comments about a dress code in Congress are hardly out of line, but we have folks today that have made this a hot button issue to where reasonable statements like Ms. Kaptur''s, taken in the context it was delivered in, to be "sexist".

Ridiculous!  Marcy Kaptur for President in 2020.  A public servant who hasn't lost her mind and who stands for working families.

Yeah, I think her words are being misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. The quote makes it sound like she's blaming the victims, when that's not true at all.

She's the kind of Democrat the Democratic Party ought to be thinking about for 2020.

When she was a more common breed of pol, the Democratic Party was the party of working folks, and America was better off for it.

Agree with this and, mostly, fuzzy mayor's comment, though Dickering perhaps with or not she should run for president. Wink

Wait, saying that wearing suggestive clothing could be seen as suggestive is controversial now in the Democratic Party?

At least this gave me an opportunity to read more about her.

Honestly she's probably one of my favorite politicians now, lol. She is left of me on a lot of issues, sure, but she tells it like it is, is fiercely patriotic (and not in the America f!*k ya kind of way), and she consistently champions middle class workers and social programs without being a hack or caring what the national party says.

If she is forced to resign over speaking the truth I will be very upset with the national party.

Kaptur's not going anywhere, folks. She was elected two years behind Mikulski and is gunning for being the longest-serving woman in Congress. She's also only in her 70's. Expect her to take Mikulski's record and run with it for another 10-years.

(Assuming the GOP doesn't gerrymander her out.)

Doesn't she live in the city of Toledo? She's probably damn near unable to be gerrymandered

She does. But if you actually draw a true NW OH district, as opposed to one that skims the lake -- her current district is non-contiguous at high tide -- it could get pretty conservative. Pitting her against Bob Latta, for example.

If rules were thrown out the window - (obviously, districts could be shifted to be more Republican too)

As a Republican, that map obviously scares the crap out of me. In a bad year, it could go 15-1 D, and those places have had wild swings. Obviously, it's just a fantasy map, but still.

It’s basically impossible for Ohio to gain any sort of meaningful seniority with this map.

People, read her actual comments in full. This is being taken out of context.

And even if it wasn't, she shouldn't go. This is, at worst, a gaffe, not harassment or assault, it's not even victim blaming. Kaptur has fought for working folks harder and longer than most, and to morons like Progressive Canadian, Kaptur was also one of 3 electeds in Ohio to endorse Sanders. She's not going anywhere, nor should she.
