What if Governor David Paterson ran for reelection in 2010 and faced businessman Donald Trump? Paterson was an unpopular governor, so I'm not sure how this race would've gone.

Discuss.

Trump loses by at least 10%, and potentially much more than that.

In polling, Paterson was defeated by most Republicans, notably a crushing 30-point margin in a Giuliani vs. Paterson matchup.

Paterson would have probably won narrowly, as Trump's extremist views became exposed.

David Paterson (D,WFP,L) 45%
Donald Trump (R) 44%
Rick Lazio (C) 7%
Howie Hawkins (G) 1%
Warren Redlich (L) 1%

I feel like the end result would be the same margin as what really happened but more evenly spread out, unlike Palidino's domination of the Buffalo area.

Trump wouldn't have held rallies about building a wall in a state with no Mexican border. He's smarter than that.

I say he could win, as it in wouldn't be impossible.

I was thinking more his birtherism. New York voted for President Obama by 28 points in 2008, and would go on to vote for him by a slightly larger margin in 2012. So, Birtherism was really unpopular in New York.

Without him questioning Obama's birth certificate, he may very well have won if he had run against Paterson.
