I agree with this article, and it comports with my own experience. The article does not explicitly say this, but the Trump thing I think is primarily driven by trade issues. And it is true that China joining GATT did a lot to cause factory jobs to go away. Those workers were the economic losers.

We all too often tend to demonize the other too much. I wish that it would all be toned down. Yes, I know, Trump is a primary perp in all of this. I don't mean to imply that I am giving am any sort of slack on any of this. I am not.

I remember when Obama said something similar in his 2004 DNC speech that launched his career and his successor is the man who's political claim to fame is saying he (Obama) wasn't born here because he's black

Division isn't a bad thing. If neither side believed they were objectively the better option for the country, we'd be screwed.

Frankly, people who tend to whine about "division" usually tend to be Democrats who are mad that people don't agree with them universally. On the other hand, the alternative is the equally annoying Republican who insists he/she is the "real American."

The writer basically regurgitates the deeply flawed "economic anxiety" argument. That argument is basically BS. Authoritarians and non-authoritarians are very different indeed.
