Washington Governor Dixy Lee Ray is renominated and wins the 1980 Washington gubernatorial election and goes on to win the 1984 Democratic Primaries. How does she fare against Reagan? Your choice of Veep.

Obviously better than Mondale but she still loses in an Electoral College landslide.  Maybe she can crack 100 EVs if she runs a really good campaign and picks a decent running mate (not sure exactly who though).

Ronald Reagan (R-CA) / George Bush (R-TX) - 401
Dixy Lee Ray (D-WA) / Hugh Carey (D-NY) - 137

Something like this?

This map + Maryland is probably Ray's best case scenario.
