If President Barack Obama were impeached for some reason by Republicans in Congress in 2015-16, like how Bill Clinton was by the House in 1998 and almost convicted by the Senate in 1999, what would happen to American politics today?

It wasn't at all close, and there was zero suspense that Clinton was in any danger of conviction.  67 votes were needed for conviction.  The first count (perjury) failed 45-55.  The second (obstruction of justice) failed 50-50.  All 45 Democrats voted no on both counts.  Five Republicans voted no on both counts, and five others voted no on the perjury count only.

The Clinton impeachment didn't keep Bush from winning, so I don't expect an Obama impeachment in the second term would keep Trump from winning. Of course, if Republicans tried to impeach Obama in his first term (post-2010 obviously), he would have won re-election by a stronger margin, and the Dems would have won the Nevada and Arizona senate races, which presuming the same results in '14 and '16, would mean tied senate right now - so no DeVos, no Mulvaney, and some of those last-minute Obama regulations would have survived.

If Clinton is the nominee her unfavorables and scandals would have helped Trump win the popular vote AND the Electoral College.

I misread the OP. I thought the hypothetical situation was that Obama was convicted after impeachment.

1) Obama was black.
2) Obama was really a Muslim.
