Strongly disagree. If I were German, for example, I would not have supported the Holocaust.

Another fairly badly worded question, but strongly disagree.

I say it's badly worded because I would support my country no matter what - I would support it by doing what I could to get people out of power who should not be there.  A country cannot not right or wrong; its government can very well be so, but a country can't be.

I strongly disagreed, however, because I assume that it's talking about your country's government, and that I would certainly not support no matter what.

I voted 'strongly disagree', but it really depends on how extreme the situation.

For example, I think my country was wrong by sending troops to Iraq, but I still support them while they are there and hope they can do the job quickly with minimal damage.

But, as another poster pointed out, if you have an extreme, genocidal situation going on, then I wouldn't support my country.

Disagree, and this is one of the stupidest questions on the test.  Why would you support something if you knew it was wrong? Roll Eyes

Agree, since I would support it unless my country was doing something like the Holocaust or was seriously oppressing its citizens.

Given that the question says "always", wouldn't that be "disagree"?

I guess so but then why would you have an agree option? This is a horribly worded question.

does this mean always support the decisions of what policies are implemented by the government of your country whether they are right or wrong?  If so, stongly disagree.

I think the main problem is that this question does not differentiate between one's country and the rulers of one's country, and it really should.

It's a stupid question.

Countries aren't right or wrong.  Governments are right or wrong.  Even if my government were evil, I would still support my country.  Your nation is like your family.  You have an obligation to put the good of your family ahead of the good of others.  In a similar fashion, I think, you have an obligation to put the good of your nation ahead of the good of others.  It doesn't mean your nation is any "better" or "worse" than any other.

There also comes a time when it is your patriotic duty to overthrow the government.  Such would be the case in Nazi Germany.  You would be supporting your country in that case.

Remember, the innermost circle of Dante's Inferno contained people who had betrayed friend, family, and country.

Nations and countries are pretty arbitrary constructs though. Unlike your family.

That is a good point.  Probably "community" is a better word.  An interesting book I had to read for a class my freshman year of college put forth the theory that all nations are "imagined communities."

It was an fascinating read.

Still, I think that a nation is an extended community that you should, under ordinary circumstances, be loyal to.  And when your government is evil or committing wrong, you are being especially loyal to your nation by opposing that government.

If you were in communist Russia you'd have supported Stalin and the KGB?  And if you were in Germany, you'd have supported Hitler?

I don't see how you would have believed that the genocide of millions was okay.  The reason those people in those countries backed Hitler and Stalin was out of fear for their lives, and not because they felt the communists and Nazis were doing the right things.
