A special election to fill newly confirmed Vice President PiT's vacant senate seat will be held starting on September 15 and lasting through September 17. So far, two candidates have declared:

Current member of the Chamber of Delegates vern1988 (Fed-NC)
Former Southern Governor Spiral (Ind-MO)

As always, I will be tracking votes on a spreadsheet, given below:

The Southern election is on the second sheet. The first sheet covers the Fremont special election to fill Barnes's seat. Coverage of that election can be found in the Fremont Record Courier, courtesy of Harry S Truman.

Last vote counted: Tim
Turnout: 60.0%

I believe the write-in vote for NeverAgain is considered invalid, as he is not a registered voter of the Southern region.

Fixed, except for the vote over time graph.

The spreadsheet and map have been updated. I will be away for 5-6 hours today and updates to the map will cease during this time. However, the spreadsheet will still be updated as usual.

Vern leads by one vote with less than 12 hours of voting left, so this election could flip either way.

Runoff next weekend. We actually had an instance of that happen last year between JCL and SouthernGothic where that went to a tie.

What is embarrassing is voting for someone who is known to be inactive and even had to be removed from office because of it.

And generally we need to stop voting for candidates unless they have a campaign thread. I like Spiral and have known him for years, but the simple fact is this not the first time that a candidate has solely relied on PMing there way to victory.

I am not saying Spiral or any in particular did this, but it is very easy for someone to PM you anything and everything and tell people what they want to hear via PM. I lost an election once because this happened and different things were told to different people, so this is a big pet peeve of mine. With a public campaign thread, at the very least everyone can see the whole picture and where a candidate stands.

It is also especially the case if the candidate has a history of inactivity in recent offices. If they cannot maintain a campaign thread, what does that say about how they will be once in office?

What is embarrassing is voting for someone who is known to be inactive and even had to be removed from office because of it.

And who also hasn't yet made a public campaign thread. And that's important--not only is AFE activity crucial to fun elections, but people who run PM-only campaigns can, for all we know, say a different contradicting message to each voter.

I get the idea of voting for people you like, but come on, at some point we have to draw a line and not just vote for name recognition + whoever sweet-talks us in PMs, and actually think about who has been active and will be active, especially rewarding those who make campaign threads, because for crying out loud, that's basic stuff.

(Yeah Yankee posted basically the same thing, but it's important enough to be read twice.)
