If romney were to primary trump in 2020 how would he do? would he have any shot of winning? Which states he win? Would he do better than a possible Kasich primary challenge?

I think he would do better than Kasich yeah. I doubt he would primary the President but I would be thrilled if he did and throw my support all the way behind him.

He'd get 10% in Iowa, 15% in New Hampshire then drop out.

Why would Romney have any chance? Trump would crush him. Trump won his election; Romney lost his. Romney's influence on the party is 100% dead (if it even existed at all).

Romney would be Jeb!'d so fast your head would spin.

Would the same thing happen to Kasich in your opinion?

Yeah I think so. Kasich lost in 2016.

I think all the Republicans that scoffed at Trump's chances in 2016 are pretty damaged. I mean the ones that really went at it - like Romney, Ayotte, Heck, Kasich, Jeb!, etc. etc.

Kasich would get destroyed in Iowa, and he'd barely make a dent in New Hampshire. I think he'd do 2% in Iowa, and 15% in New Hampshire (same as Romney).

IF Trump is going to face a serious challenger, I don't think it will be from a candidate that has ran before. It'd have to be someone entirely new and not vetted/embarrassed by Trump. Trump would clown Kasich if Kasich ran. Romney would be Jeb! 2.0.

Both Kasich and Romney would lose, but I think Romney has the potential to do better, and would certainly have a better shot than Kasich at winning at least one primary (Utah).

It's certainly possible for there to be enough GOP voters disenchanted with Trump in 2020 for a challenger to get Buchanan '92-esque numbers (more than 20% of the national popular vote, and more than a third of the vote in at least certain states).

But that isn't going to work if the challenger is running to Trump's left on every single issue.  You've got to pick a few issues where Trump has "let down the conservative movement" and make those central to your critique of him.  Kasich seems more likely than Romney to run to Trump's left on absolutely everything (e.g., he can't stand talking about Medicaid expansion), so I think his potential to get Buchanan '92 numbers is limited.  There just aren't enough "moderate" Republican primary voters for that to work.  Romney is more likely to take an ideological opening where he finds one, so I guess he might do OK if Trump is wounded.  But I doubt anyone can actually beat Trump for the nomination, barring some extraordinary circumstances.

I read an article that was talking about how Romney was gearing up in 2020 if Clinton won

Well, she didn't.

If Mitt wants to be helpful, he can run as an independent and siphon enough votes off to make it easier for the Democrat to win.

He got scared out of the race by Jeb! That's so hilarious in hindsight.

Oh yeah that's right haha.

Jeb! was supposed to scare of all contenders, but he only scared off one: Romney.

LOL @ anyone who thinks Romney could even put a dent in the Trump Train.

Romney=male Hillary.  He had two tries and lost both of them.  Time for him to move on.

He's also a male Hillary because he's put his foot in his mouth occasionally, and people don't like him and warm to him.  They find him guarded and phony, which he does come off as.
