link[quote]What's been hardest is the way our legal system is structured to favor private property. I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be. I think there's a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community, that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs. And I would, too. Unfortunately, what stands in the way of that is hundreds of years of history that have elevated property rights and wealth to the point that that's the reality that calls the tune on a lot of development.

<snip>

Look, if I had my druthers, the city government would determine every single plot of land, how development would proceed. And there would be very stringent requirements around income levels and rents. That's a world I'd love to see, and I think what we have, in this city at least, are people who would love to have the New Deal back, on one level. They'd love to have a very, very powerful government, including a federal government, involved in directly addressing their day-to-day reality.

I agree with the sentiment(I dislike NIMBY and suburbia), but wow what *fantastic* phrasing

I don't want the city government to have quite as much power as he does. But I agree with him that the entrenched power of elites is a major impediment to reforms that would help 95% of people.

Then he should put his money where his mouth is and pursue policies that defang NIMBYs, many of whom are progressives in his base. Otherwise, this is all talk.

Sympathize with his aim, policy-wise. The rent freeze helped save many from eviction in NYC and expanding affordable housing is crucial at a time when these frivolous, luxury $2M/unit condos are popping up like acne. He needs to do a lot more with income inequality as he pointed out in the article, and clearly the subway needs an attentive eye.

If New York City wants to control what happens with properties, it should buy them.  I'm all for reasonable zoning, but this goes way beyond reasonable.

Future Democratic nominee if it weren't for the scandals. This is why I still generally support Republicans in the US Smiley.

Of course Bill de Blasio doesn't actually believe any of this and is merely playing the leftist rubes like a fiddle.

Main evidence being his actual policies on housing.

He hates property owners, except for himself obviously.  He can decide rent and such for the entire city it seems.  What a disgusting, power hugry man.

You want Hillary to run in 2020, yet are having a go at De Blasio for being power-hungry?

Okay then.

I know, but I also recognize that you have an image of the Republican party that is at odds with what it actually is today.

Yes, if only it had the exuberance, internationally knowledged cultural landmarks like the met, the Museum of Natural History etc etc etc etc, International artistic Landmark, the Center of world Commerce, diversity that offers a literally a thousand choices in ethnic cuisine, celebrations, interactions, plus being as American as apple pie and what Middle America tries to ignore.

Yes, someday it will equal Alabama in these areas. Roll Eyes

NYC doesn't suck anywhere near as much as "family values" Christian Conservative Robert Bentley's mistress

And ironically, Bentley was considered "moderate" by AL GOP standards because he stood against the legislature in not TOTALLY f#$king the poor over.
