I think this guy might be low-key one of the worst powerful leaders in the world right now, worse than Trump, Modi, Bibi and possibly even Erdogan and Zuma, given that he flies completely under the radar, and yet is alarming in how much he is telegraphing his intentions.

He has not called for mass arrests of dissidents and journalists like Erdogan or seizure of property like Zuma or demonetization to deliberately hurt the poor like Modi or support the expansion of settlements into disputed territories like Netanyahu. Yes, he is advocating Japan's re-militarization which is a Pandora's Box but he's not worse than any of these people given the relative lack of power of the PM of Japan. For a long time the PM was a revolving door position and he's only a vote of confidence away from being gone.

HP.

I wouldn't say he's worse than Trump or Erdogan. It's just that the likes of Trump and Erdogan have lowered the bar so much that Abe doesn't appear to be a scumbag anymore, even though he counted as a scumbag in the pre-Trump world.

I now support Japanese remilitarization. Japan has to learn how to defend itself apart from the U.S., as our country is now led by an irresponsible, psychologically stunted individual. That being said, I wish he was more like Moon Jae-In.

That's the thing: erdogan is roundly criticised, bibi is routinely censured, Zuma is the target of healthy criticism from all sides and even Modi, despite his fawning coverage, normally has a little sting about the Gujarat riots. Even Turkey, a country which is leaping back into dictatorship, has a fired up opposition to its actions, even though they are constrained. But the Abe admin, despite its clear links to far-right groups and Nazis, its chilling effect on press admin and arguably passing more draconian legislation (in regards to "conspiracies" and "official secrets") than any of the rest, and has been more insidious in its links over the media than the rest.
