1980 RESULTS

President Jimmy Carter (D-GA)/ VP Walter Mondale (D-MN): 284 EV, 44% pv
Fmr. Gov. Ronald Reagan (R-CA)/ Fmr. CIA Director George Bush (R-TX): 254 EV, 47% pv
Rep John Anderson (I-IL)/ Fmr. Gov. Patrick Lucey (I-WI): 3% pv

Suppose this had happened instead, and the Zero Curse happens anyway via John Hinckley, so Mondale becomes President in 1981.

How do things go from here?

Since the economy rebounded by 1984, Mondale wins a close reelection. I 1988, I see HW having a comeback and winning over Vice President Reubin Askew, who has been appointed by President Mondale under the 25th amendment.

✓ President Walter Mondale (D-MN)/Vice President Reubin Askew (D-FL): 282 EVs.; 50.3%
Senator Bob Dole (R-KS)/Representative Phil Crane (R-IL): 256 EVs.; 48.3%
