Old news but not covered here. State Sen. Bob Krist is running as a third-party candidate in Nebraska's gubernatorial election. His plan is to create a new party, and he needs 120,000 signatures to get on the ballot.

That's like, what, 20% of the voters statewide? Good luck.

I think 10%. The article said he needs 10% of 1.2 million voters registered

Article says 10% to run as an *independent *, but a mere 5k to run as a third party.

That's also true; I was comparing to the actual turnout in 2016 (which would actually be 14% of that; probably 20-25% of midterm voters). At least he has a chance through the minor party route.

I just hope his whole shtick isn't about being a "moderate hero".

I endorse any plan that bounces Ricketts out of office. From what I understand, he's well on his way to going the way of the Brownback.

So in practice, wouldn't all independent candidates just create their own fake shell party for purposes of their campaign? Kind of like the Connecticut for Lieberman Party in 2006?

Apparently Krist had been asked by the NE Democratic Party to be its nominee, and he denied.

http://kwbe.com/local-news/bob-krist-for-governor-democrats-asked-i-said-i-cant/

This could be big in my opinion. When he does get a party up and running, there could be a chance that the Democrats just don't run a candidate or the eventual candidate drops out a la Chad Taylor (Kansas 2014).

He's kind of an idiot. At least that's the idea I get from my Nebraskan friend.

Almost as bad as Brownback. He's a plutocrat trying his best, but he's very incompetent. I'd put him down with McAuliffe, Raimondo, Brownback, Malloy, Scott, and LePage.

For context, Ricketts has an approval rating of 59%, as per Morning Consult. That can certainly change though. Democrats would be smart to sit this race out.

Well,  I was mistaken. Krist is still planning on creating a new party so as to get on the ballot easier.

Omaha World Heard front page article this morning:

http://www.omaha.com/news/politics/bob-krist-s-independent-bid-for-nebraska-governor-has-democrats/article_550c7a92-77ad-58a8-b34a-a671323052b5.html

Interesting that although Jane Kleeb references allegedly making efforts to recruit some unnamed 'strong' candidates for governor, not one is mentioned.  I tend to doubt they will get anyone with the name recognition to do this.

Maybe some sort of fusion with no Dem ticket for governor/Lt Governor and a moderate Democrat at Krist's running mate. I could get behind that.

Well the plan to have a clean race between Ricketts and an independent came unraveled today.

I dont have a link to it but some college professor took out papers to file as a democrat for Governor. Not sure if he was recruited by the state party or if he just thought it'd be a fun thing to do. In either case this idiot will attract sufficient votes to ensure Ricketts wins a plurality.

Wonder if the GOP put him up to it?

Isn't Jane Kleeb running already? I've been under the impression that she would win the primary and drop to let Krist run 1v1 with Ricketts.

I'd be totally down with a Krist-Kleeb fusion ticket a la Alaska 2014, TBH.

I will endorse Krist if he promises or has promised to institute an independent redistricting commission or some other way to implement fair maps. NE-02 right now is gerrymandered, fair maps could potentially make it a tilt D district
