Dutch?  Wow, that's an unusual one.  How did you learn that?

Born in the Netherlands.

Dutch and German are quite similar... perhaps due to the Germans invading us repeatedly over the centuries...

Cool.  Some of my family is from the Netherlands, way back.  Unfortunately, I don't speak a word of Dutch.  It would be fun to learn, if I had the time.  I've heard it's very similar to German.

English, basically. I took two semesters of college Japanese (other language classes were at inconvenient times) and forgot most of it afterwards. I also tried Spanish and Dutch but didn't have enough time to practice regularly. I am a terrible, terrible American. Tongue

If we want to get into that realm, then I also know...

C
C++
C#
Java
SQL
VBA
XML
XQuery
HTML
Javascript
PHP

...and I also know the quite useless but nonetheless scary-looking assembly language for the Motorola 68HC11 microcontroller.

If I recall correctly, Dutch is often referred to as "low German".

I know nothing further about it, except for the fact that some Dutch guy made a Dutch version of the song "Barbie Girl".

In addition to English and Ebonics, I'm getting good at Russian, except not really.

Dude, that's pisspoor. Smiley  But you don't need to worry; you speak the language of love, the international language. Smiley

Nation, since you're apparently into trashy older movies (based upon your membership in the John Waters cult), did you ever see "Better Off Dead" with John Cusack?  I think it came out in 1985.  There's a hilarious scene involving this fat, nerdy kid and his equally fat and out of control mother, with the mother saying that her son and a French exchange student who's living with them are speaking the "language of love."  Of course she was delusional.  The girl was really cute and wanted nothing to do with her son; she was after John Cusack, who was pining after this bitch who dumped him.  Of course, they got together at the end, as always.

Used to be reasonably fluid with German, but as I haven't used it I've lost a lot of it.

I'd say English and German only, but I've studied Italian and French too.

English, a small bit of French, and rapidly-fading Latin.

Native Born English Speaker

I took French for 4 years in Middle School & High School, I can speak and read at a good level but can't write too well.

I took 1 year of Latin, the teacher never taught us how to speak it b/c she said it was a dead language anyway!

My ancestors were German, so I know a few phrases. As one of the robots said in MSTK3K, "Ah German, the language of love."

One of the biggest mistakes I ever made was to not take Spanish. That decision will haunt me as Spanish becomes more and more common in the coming years.

I speak Finnish as mother language. I read and write English fairly well or what you think? Talking is much more weaker.

I have studied Swedish and German, but forgotten most of them.

And thanks to Dean for adding my tiny language to the list!

But sounds very different, more like Norwegian or Danish maybe. I met once in a train some people who talked a strange language. I thought it was Hungrian. I was surprised when they told that their language was Dutch.

German - fluently (duh)
English - fluently. I do have an accent though
French - not really fluently, but easily well enough to get around, and get complimented on by the French (something that will hardly ever happen to even the most fluent foreigner in Britain or America, btw)
Italian - I can still read and understand Italian quite well. I used to speak it much better than I do, due to lack of practice. If you put me down into an Italian family, I'd probably start speaking again soon enough
Spanish, Dutch, Latin, Russian, Hindi - I know some set phrases. I can understand a fair bit in a written text. That's about it. (Yeah, I can read Cyrillic and Devanageri)
Arabic - I tried to learn once, for a couple of months, but I've forgotten almost everything

Fluent English, enough Spanish to begin to get by, kind of (For instance, I can now say such handy phrases as 'Vostotros estabais comiendo unas faldas.' Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy which I'm sure I will use many times)... I'm starting to understand the difference between the pretriere or however you spell it and the past imperfect, whoop whoop!

Heh.  I'm doing Spanish 2X over the summer so I can skip it... little did I know before starting it that you could skip 4X anyway Angry so I would never have to double up.

Oh well.

See my profile for a handy Ebonics phrase in Spanish Grin

I also know a few words of French (My most complex sentence is probably 'My name is Cheese', but due to psychotic French spelling I haven't the faintest idea of how to spell it), German ('Ich bin ein gutenhosen!' is probably the most complex sentence.  If there should be umlauts somewhere or if I spelled something wrong, too bad >P), Chinese (I can say 'ni hao' reasonably well I'm told, and I was learning a bit more before I forgot it all over the summer), Japanese (Konnichiwa, adigato, sayonara, ichi, ni, san... I also know how to play rock-paper-scissors.  That's all I learned from my 6 day Japanese immersion camp I took after 3rd grade to learn how to translate Pokemon cards, which I didn't Tongue), Russian (da, nyet, bAbushka, and, yes, the a should be what is stressed not the 'u'), and Polish (I know how to say 'pig'... but I can't spell it for the life of me Tongue darn Polish Tongue).

Though I only voted for English and Spanish because those are the only languages I have at least pseudo-kind-of-sort-of-fluency in Smiley
