I think the race would be totally different.  The reason the electoral map is the way it is today is because the Bush-Gore race.  States like Delaware and California were not Democratic states in 2000.  They were Clinton states.  Since McCain is closer to Clinton than Bush, he would have won a lot of voters in these states.
