McCain probably does a few points better in the popular vote than Bush. Anyone have any polling data? Maps?

Looks pretty realistic, though I think some of those states would be darker (Nevada, Alaska, perhaps NH) and maybe add Wisconsin to the McCain column.

maybe, maybe not.  Gotta remember, at the time Gore was pretty popular as a VP when trying to distance himself during the Clinton impeachment, and McCain was not the media whore he is now.

Michigan but not Minnesota? Why the hell? It was +5 to Gore. MN was 2.

Gore wins because McCain is too honest to pull any Florida business.

I'd have to say McCain would win by a lot. His EV margin would certainly be bigger than Bush's, and there certainly would have been no Florida-type court battle. Gore might have done a little better in the South than he did in OTL, seeing as he was southern and McCain wasn't.

You think the race would be the exact same?

I think the race would be totally different.  The reason the electoral map is the way it is today is because the Bush-Gore race.  States like Delaware and California were not Democratic states in 2000.  They were Clinton states.  Since McCain is closer to Clinton than Bush, he would have won a lot of voters in these states.

While McCain wouldve been a stronger candidate, the primaries would have hurt alot, causing a coinflip election both with PV and EV

He really isn't a true moderate.  His strength is getting the media to believe he is.

I think that overall McCain would have won by more than Bush did, although the GOP base wouldn't have turned out as well as it did. This may have had an effect down-ballot somewhat.

McCain - 47% - 266 EVs
Gore - 48% - 272 EVs
Nader - 3%
Buchanun - 2%

I'm actually going to stray from the crowd here. I think that McCain will be busted for a few of his liberal votes and stances and this I think this would increase the "Buchanun Effect".

New Jersey?? California??  Gore would definitely do better in the Midwest and probably pick up Pennsylvania and maybe Florida.  You overestimate McCain's popularity.

No way.  McCain definitely loses those states.
