One of the most suspicious things about Trump's behavior re: the Russia story is that he doesn't own it like all of his other scandals. Mexico sending rapists? I'm just telling it like it is! Bragging about sexual assault? It's just locker room talk! Firing Comey? The guy's a nut job! Improper relations with the Russian government? Don't know what you're talking about - didn't happen. If Trump was the chess master his supporters portray him as, he'd have been out in front of this story long ago, decrying how stupid the laws must be that important businessmen running for president can't collude with foreign governments, or saying that he and Putin are working on some super secret plan to kill all terrorists and bring back coal, or something, and anyone who questions their motives is an ISIS operative.

Or perhaps that IS his chessmastery. Why get in front and start an argument when you can just deny and people believe? Why use complicated moves and tactics if the simpler move is less expected?

Was it not Karl Rove's strategy with Bush Jr to do this?

I think there are two issues here:

1) Donald Trump Jr. has repeatedly changed his story on meeting Russians. Everytime it looked "worse" for him. Why should his current version of events regarded as truthful?

2) By his own admission, Donald Trump Jr. met with the Russian lawyer because she claimed to have damaging information on Hillary Clinton. Which raises the question where exactly he would have drawn the line? Would he have been also willing to meet the Russian lawyer had she promised to hack the election in his father's favour? Would he have been willing to meet with members of the Russian Embassy had they claimed to have damaging information on the Democrats?

Fox News hosts have recently shifted their rhetoric on Russia from "No collusion" to "Well technically it wouldn't be a crime even if he did." I think they'll go on to reference the infamous October surprise conspiracy theory and tie Trump to Reagan in this regard. Trump played Russia like Reagan played Iran! What a beast! Yeah, the rats are now abandoning "you can't prove the Trump campaign conspired with the Russians" with haste, and pretending they were never there. I see them carrying goalposts to "it wasn't illegal", "Russia didn't rig the vote" (never seriously presented), and "Trump isn't a Russian intelligence asset".

Also, hacking computers and stealing emails are crimes under U.S. law.  If a person goes to a fence and offers to buy a TV they know or suspect is stolen, they are also guilty of receiving stolen goods.  This situation is analogous.
