How come that men and gays are heavily overrepresented?
My guess: Women are simply not interested in politics, and gays have been fighting for their rights, thus watching politics with great interest?

This forum loves polls so there is a surprisingly large amount of demo data for Atlas if you search the Forum Community board (searching thread subject gets best results)

To answer your question, college-aged is the most prevalent group here.

Mostly college aged; some, like me, Classic, JTC, and I think a few others are rather younger, whilst others are older.

This forum is by far the most demographically skewed place for LGBT men that I've ever seen on a forum that has nothing to do with sexuality/relationships on its face. I don't know what it is either.

is the definitive thread about why the forum is so unbelievably skewed male.  I think Beet made the most interesting point about how the forum is kind of unusual in terms of how people find it:

Well, places usually grow by word of mouth or by advertising. In first person shooter forums for example, the advertising is the game, which men and women both see in stores, and is played by so many men that some women are bound to come into contact with it, try it, and like it enough to post in a forum. With other political sites that I go to, they tend to be well known, or the people in them started out drawn together as a group in real life that expanded into a online group, kind of like phknrocket1k was saying. Groups in real life tend to be mixed gender, so when translated online, it became that way as well.

This site is a place where you aren't going to find it unless you go searching. We're not tied to any particular famous events or personalities. Dave doesn't have a blog that attracts many links or hits to this site. We get a traffic surge around election day just for people looking for information, IIRC, but it mostly hangs beneath the surface. People have made friends here but it's relatively rare for existing members to bring in their friends or family. Statesrights is one of the exceptions and the result that was one of our few female members.

In other words, this site is designed very much as a social networking island. It's unusually disconnected. I'm not sure that answers the OP's question but I think it has something to do with it.

So it seems like it could be a combination of this stuff:

1. How people find the forum (Beet)
2. The existing white male dominated perspective also influences what lurkers might end up registering in the first place (Lunar)
3. This isn't a normal politics forum. It's heavy on election results/data. In that sense, it's like the sport aspect of politics (Smid)
4. The Internet already has less women on its countless forums, so this is a compounding issue.


I'll be honest, I'm in Florida to take care of family. If I was never essentially cut off from my friends up North and in this particular funk that I am, it's 99.99% likely I'd never have registered here. My lifestyle before was not conducive to it.
