Not unless it's part of a general ban of public sector unions.

Police in this nation deserve to have the right to organize just like everyone else.

When asked if X should be banned, the default is to say no.  I'm no fan of cop unions as they cost local tax payers billions of dollars, but thankfully local and state govts have seem to have realized how bad they screwed up on deals with public sector unions in the past and starting to correct it.  We're all going to be screwed in the mean time though.

but that doesn't mean they should be banned.  People/employees should be able to get together and make deals with their employers.  On the other hand, you shouldn't be forced to join if you are a cop either.

No.

But their conduct should be an instructive example to Democrats of why so many people view unions in general unfavorably - the sense that it's impossible to get rid of terrible people.

As much as I hate them, I see no valid rationale to make an exception to workers' right to organize, which is one of the fundamental principles of the left.

Public-sector unions have done much damage to California. I don't support banning any kind of unions outright (per freedom of association), but their power needs to be greatly curtailed.

I suppose they're a necessary evil.  A large scale police force probably should be represented by a union in contract negotiations.

Unlike the horrible horrible teacher's  union, they can't use strikes as a threat.

Like the horrible horrible teacher's union, their members can do no wrong.

You get to ban police unions and we get to ban teachers' unions. Deal?

Noted progressive hero Sherrod Brown was endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police(?) in his 2012 re-election bid.

Have there been any studies (not just anecdotal evidence) on whether unionized police behave differently than non-unionized police?

No. Freedom of assembly. Banning them violates the 1st Amendment.

Of course they should be allowed to unionise.  Everyone should be allowed to unionise.  Everyone should be allowed to go on strike.  Everyone should be allowed to quit their job at any time.  No exceptions.

Even those states and many Federal employees too who place such law on the public sector workers allows for trade unions by legal definition, in stead hat they do is disallow the labour union from bargaining wide range of issues to working conditions and wages.
