Chavez made a lot of mistakes, but he wasn't a terrible person. He even improved life for many low-income Venezuelans, but his legacy has since unraveled under subsequent leadership. Trump, on the other hand, is an entirely horrible person and if he had the concentrated powers possessed by Chavez, would be on the path to running our country straight into the ground.

Is "improved life for many low-income Venezuelans" worth making all your people less free and throwing the entire economy in the toilet.  He drove the car off the cliff and happened to die before it hit the ground.  You can't absolve him of his crimes because he paid lip service to the some of the same politics you do and died before the sh**t really hit the fan.

He may still be better than Trump, I don't think so, but I can see the arguments.  There is no way Hugo wasn't a terrible person though.  He was.

Chavez is dead and was a strongman who locked up rivals & dissidents. He eliminated opposition to try to become the next Castro.

Trump is a rube, a neophyte, and extremely thin-skinned. He listens to the advice of those around him without guiding principles. Obviously if the US military gets in huge expanded wars DJT will further go down but in the very least I don't think he will last or be as destructive long-term as Chavez was for Venezuela with his corruption and regressive policies.

How about just Trump vs Maduro?

Unfortunately, the alt-left of Michael Moore, Lyndon LaRouche, and Howard Zinn is more popular among the Democratic mainstream than most Republicans. That will likely mean that Maduro beats out Trump with Atlas's Democrats.

I remember in the leftists only poll I did before on Reagan vs Castro , Castro nearly beat Reagan : https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=253475.0. Yes Reagan still won but he should have won that poll by a much much larger margin then what happened .

Now trump is clearly worse then Reagan and Chavez is slightly better then Castro so its not a shock that many  leftists prefer Chavez even though that's simply the wrong opinion .

Both are scumbags. I'd abstain, write-in, or go third party if those were the two candidates.

Same thing really, no troll. In fact the GOP economic and leadership plan is very similar to the late Chavez.

Trump obviously, though as bad as Chavez was, I can still understand why a leftist would vote for him. He wasn't a dictator so much as a strongman. There is a fine line between the two, and the only reason it wasn't crossed was his eventual demise.

What exactly is the question here?

Because obviously Trump is causing less damage to the US than Chavez did to Venezuela. But I'm not convinced that's because Trump is "better", it's rather that he's constrained by much better democratic institutions.

Had Trump come to power in a banana republic we can't know for sure how it would have turned out but I don't think there is good reason to think it would have been much different from Chavez' rule.
