The House race in Wyoming was almost a tie - 48.3-47.8. Barbara Cubin won by a little over 1,000 votes over her Dem challenger Gary Trauner. 2006 was a strong Dem year but Wyoming is one of the least elastic states. I know very little about Cubin's record, but her 12 years in office indicate she wasn't a bad fit for the state. Was she involved in controversy or scandal at the time?

She retired in 2008 - Trauner ran again and lost to Lummis by 10 points (close by Wyoming standards). Lummis likely benefited from higher turnout due to the Presidential race.

Was Trauner just an exceptionally strong candidate? If yes, should Dems be recruiting him against Cheney?

Was always a fan of Freudenthal. Even still, a 12-year entrenched GOP incumbent in the reddest state in the country (federally at least) surely couldn't have come within a point of defeat due solely to a landslide at the top of the ticket? Something else had to have been going on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Cubin#Controversies

Cubin was very controversial and didn't know when to shut her mouth.

Yeah, she was Helen Chenoworth/Michelle Bachmann/Louis Gohmert level crazy. Add in a big Democratic wave year, the Democratic governor winning every county in his re-election bid that year, states having not being QUITE so solidified into Red and Blue camps (yet), and Trauner running a pretty good campaign....

And in Wyoming even that wasn't quite enough.

Elsewhere on Atlas, someone said that Gary Trauner was a wheelchair user and Cubin said the below to him, but on wiki it appears to be regarding the Libertarian candidate.
