FBI Directors serve terms that overlap with different presidencies for a reason. And as Yank said, it won't really hide anything, but likely an attempt for him to install a loyalist who he believes will protect him. This isn't normal behavior, and it's highly suspicious.

The FBI is a large bureaucracy with a lot of egos and pride. A new director is not going to derail their law enforcement work. Comey became a celebrity and turned FBI investigations into a media circus. He couldn't possibly stay.
