Do you think he makes the runoff and gets clobbered, or do you think some Republican advances then gets clobbered by Pelosi?

Endorsed anyway, but yeah, there's gonna be no run-off.

I seem to think he advances, then loses. Do you think some GOP candidate advances instead?

If he's lucky, he'll get vaporized twice.

The Republicans will cobble together some ~9% of the vote in the primary,  so as long as he gets ahead of that he can get into the runoff.    Last year an indy just barely beat the Republican in the primary.

One way or another though, Pelosi will squish him like a bug.

Uh, runoffs in CA happen regardless of if a candidate reaches 50%.

Anyway, I'm guessing Pelosi wins. Jaffe seems like a nice guy so I guess I'll "endorse" him for now.

LOL

There is a better chance of the zombie apocalypse happening than Pelosi losing reelection in the 12th. That said, the election involving Pelosi that will actually be interesting is the one on January 3, 2019...for Speaker.

Most of the type of people who would vote against Pelosi can no longer afford to live in her district, so she's extremely safe.

Well, he probably gets into run-off (Republicans are extremely weak in SF, and there are enough wild-eyed idiots ready to vote for him there). But he has zero chances in general.

Yup, those who work at low pay jobs in San Francisco are increasingly living in places like Stockton, which had the percent largest increase in rent this last year of any city in the country. But if you're an out of touch self described capitalist worth 9 digits like Nancy Pelosi, then you can suck up space in San Francisco.

Describing yourself as a capitalist is actually very 'in-touch'. This is not a socialist country, and it never will be.

True, but responding to someone's concerns with a simple "We're capitalists, and that's the way it is" is out-of-touch.

2016 was the only time a Republican failed to make the runoff and that was mostly because the GOP presidential primary didn't draw many people out because it was over. Pelosi is an institution, so it's not as if it matters who makes the top two.

Are we even sure Pelosi will run again?  I believe she said she would have retired last cycle if Hillary had won.

Not sure how accurate this is, but the conventional wisdom is that she wants to prevent Steny Hoyer from ever being leader.

Stepping aside and just letting Tim Ryan take over would've had the same effect.

Well if she thinks she stands an actual chance of becoming Speaker again I can't see why she'd retire. She's spent the last several years in opposition, I imagine she'd want to retire having been Speaker again. Looks better for the legacy.

Now if the dems do fail to capture the house, which I think is still more likely than not, maybe she will retire. I don't think so though. I think she wants to be a vocal part of the Trump resistance and opposing him has really given her a new zest as it were.

Pelosi was a good speaker but her time has gone & it's not age, she is way out of touch & a terrible speaker & incredibly bland. This guy is also 70+ so I don't know if he is right fit. Perhaps it is time for a new leadership & Pelosi should retire. She would still be a pretty decent Speaker & would get stuff done under a Dem Presidency but 2020 is a long way off !

Pelosi's only real job at this point is to stand in the way of new leadership coming into power (in hindsight, Tim Ryan really should've been elected House leader), so I'm all for a primary challenge.
