Opinion of former California Governor Gray Davis?

I would rate him as mild FF. Definitely has/had some flaws, but also passed some good reforms.

All I know about him is that he was the one before Arnold. I voted HP because I can't imagine you're very good if you get re-elected and then thrown out of office a year later.

Empty suit sonnuva beep! The 1998 bench was vast and he got picked? What a joke.

He also precedes Sam Brownback in proving that one can be re-elected despite toilet bowl approval ratings.

That said, he didn't really deserve the recall and his Lt. Governor was even worse.

Bill Simon was even less likable. Peter Camejo (Green) broke 5% in 2002 (and won a few Emerald Triangle precincts) because Davis was also unlikable.

Gray Davis would have lost to Richard Riordan, but he ran a vicious series of attack ads to ensure he would lose the primary to Bill Simon. Gray Davis was a good negative campaigner (about the only good thing I can say about him), but when he was facing a recall and no longer had someone else to slander he reached the end of his political career.

Now that I've looked at the ones who did run [despite the YUGE bench] besides him, yeah, he was best...which in and of itself is sad.
