Every single one these lists that contains a president born after the point of divergence is WRONG.

Here's an example from the most recent post, Truman as Teddy. Tim Ryan, as Harris Wofford's last VP, ascends to the office in 2019. There's only one problem: Tim Ryan, born in our timeline in 1973...does not exist in this different timeline. The probability of the parents of Tim Ryan going through the exact same series of events in their lives since the POD in the latter 1940s leading up to his conception, then the same sperm reaching the same egg, then the same pregnancy and birth, then the same childhood events, same opportunities acquired to become a politician..the probability is infinitesimal.

Ever since I realized this truth this thread has become among the worst on atlas for me. If Harry Truman's presidency is different in even one tenth the magnitude required for him to pick a different vice president then the resulting cascade of different choices derived from different conditions and events makes it is more likely for the US to become an insane Catholic Communist theocratic regime then it is for Barack Obama or Tim Ryan to Ever. Be. BORN. Much less become aspiring politicians, politicians, then president.
Dude nothing is fun about random colored names on a list. If they’re not real or at least inspired by a real person, how would anyone understand it?

The amount of "realism" needed to acknowledge this also involves such a magnitude of fantasy--deciding which alternate reproductive cells might pair up, how the president at the time affects baby names, etc.--that it is not at any point a box worth opening unless you admit you're being even more speculative than someone who uses Nixon in a timeline diverging before 1913.

If we wanted to entertain this notion seriously, there was a discussion in Lief's American Monarchy timeline, as I recall, where this was brought up. The author's(?) conclusion was that, though Nixon (for example) might not ever be born in a timeline that diverges in the 1780s, he was at least a representation of someone like Nixon. And, Hell, why not use a face and character audiences already know and love? Trying to manufacture new biographies, names, and faces wholecloth is not only not worth it, it detracts from the story/narrative aspect.

Saw "Sr." and "Jr." and thought someone stole my idea of President Birch Bayh (i.e. the one born in 1928) in the 2000s and that the one who died in 1971 lived another 15 years or so.

Ah, John Edwards.

2004 - John Edwards/Dennis Kucinich (D) defeat George Bush/Dick Cheney (R), 298-239.

President Edwards admits to the affair after its initial reporting in October of 2007. and announces he will not seek a second term, but will not resign.

Hillary Clinton easily wins a rushed, panicked Democratic primary, but the Edwards affair, his refusal to resign, and a damaged economy have severely hurt the Democratic Party's reputation.

2008 - John McCain/Paul Ryan (R) defeat Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine (D), 291-247.

President McCain and Vice President Ryan lead the turnaround of the economy, and the GOP makes massive gains in the Congress due to the Democratic Party facing several aforementioned scandals. Barack Obama becomes a rising star, but voters still have too much faith in McCain come November.

2012 - John McCain/Paul Ryan (R) defeat Barack Obama/Jack Reed, 284-254.

In their second term, McCain and Ryan are victims of a weakening GOP momentum and a rise in problematic social issues for the nation, such as a rise in mass shootings and the debate over Gay Marriage rights - but are able to finish their terms without major scandal.

2016 Republican Primary - Sarah Palin (a rising star who was never tarnished by a failed VP run) defeats Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham, and Jon Huntsman.

2016 Democratic Primary - Elizabeth Warren defeats Joe Biden.

2016 - Elizabeth Warren/Julian Castro (D) defeat Sarah Palin/Scott Walker (R), 294-244.

After decades of deciding not to run, Businessman Donald Trump decides to run, and we finally get our current administration, an election later.

2020 - Donald Trump/Mike Pence (R) defeat Elizabeth Warren/Julian Castro (D), 295-243.

I presume this means that Edwards still has an affair while in office a-la Clinton, even though it wouldn't have been the specific affair that brought him down?

Either way. I was thinking he pulls a move similar to the current administration and finds a way to just shrug it off until the new President is elected. Tongue

A one-term Congressman as Veep, a guy who's never held office for President, and a 32-year-old woman for President (who's also only been in Congress for one term) are all pretty woke.

Suppose Haley also fits, I just remember a "oh Trump is obviously going to lose, so the Republicans are going to nominate a young, moderate, coastal woman (i.e. the opposite of every key Republican demographic) to beat Clinton in 2020. Haley kinda fits too but many people thought Stefanik would run for governor of NY in 2020 and win over Cuomo (as a moderate).
