According to a new report from the Hartford Courant:

http://www.courant.com/politics/hc-gov-malloy-will-not-seek-a-third-term-20170413-story.html

This certainly opens the door for interested Democrats like State Sen. Ted Kennedy Jr. (yes, that Kennedy family.)

http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/A-Kennedy-for-Connecticut-governor-11028630.php

After reading that article, I think Kennedy would make a pretty strong candidate, no?

Continuous budget woes despite alarmingly high taxes (which he's increased), and many people and corporations leaving the state.

Well that's a relief. Democrat's chances of keeping this seat went up significantly.

*exhales*

I totally thought Malloy's ego would convince him to run for another term.

Regardless, Ted Jr. is the favorite unless someone else jumps in. Do we expect a bunch more candidates to jump in now that Malloy's out?

This is probably good news to Democrats and Republicans alike.

Nah, Ted Jr. is pretty weak from what I hear.  Kevin Lembo seems like a much more likely bet.

Now the only Dem-held state to worry about is Minnesota.

Would anyone from the Congressional delegation want to run for Governor? Jim Himes or Elizabeth Esty maybe?

Himes no, Esty was thought to be a maybe but it's actually her husband Dan that might be looking at a run. This could be a very crowded primary for both parties.

I'm really skeptical of the political talents of any Kennedy born after 1935 or so, but I assume Ted Jr. can win this for the Dems.

(Also someone should change the name of the thread to spell Malloy's name right)

Imagine two Democratic governors with Kennedy elected in 2018: Chris Kennedy in Illinois, and Ted Kennedy, Jr. in Connecticut.

I think it's Lean R. It is a prime Republican gubernatorial pickup. If Tom Foley runs again, it's his, but Kennedy Jr. or Drew will give him a competitive race.

Ehhhhh. Tilt D, I guess. I feel like Trump will pull the Democratic nominee to victory.

Now the only Dem-held state to worry about is Minnesota.

I wouldn't call Tom Wolf safe.

Or Colorado. And Connecticut is still nowhere near safe even with this. Arguably Rhode Island too.

I wouldn't worry too much about Colorado. Rhode Island is definitely a possibility though. As is Connecticut; the idea that Malloy leaving will make this Safe D is quite bizarre, considering recent events in Maryland and Vermont.
