We're out of the rumor zone now, as Collins has vocally expressed her interest during a radio interview.

She is like Heitkamp, Manchin, and McCaskill in 2014-15 when they were considering running for governor in their respective states.

These are senators that despise partisan rancor in American politics today. Period. I think she still stays in the U.S. Senate, but ME-GOV 2018 is a Tossup.

If she runs for Governor, the Democrats path to a majority in the Senate just got a lot easier.

A Democratic legislature with governor Collins could probably do the state some good. Get the stink of LePage out of there.

Would depend on how popular the appointed successor is. Easier than taking her out in '20, but likely not a cake-walk scenario.

If she runs the race is hers. The question would be who she would nominate to be her replacement.

The article cited suggests LePage could get to do the nominating.

Steve Abbott, Bruce Poliquin, Charlie Summers, Roger Katz, Kimberly Rosen, and Amy Volk are all plausible and all varying degrees of moderates.

When George Mitchell was appointed to fill in Muskie's seat there was no special election before a regular one in 1982, even though he was appointed May 1980.

Not before 2020.

This would give the Dems a solid pickup opportunity for 2020, but I don't think it'd be a sure thing. Mainers love ticket splitting.

Lepage's term ends 1/5/19 and Collin's term ends 1/3/21 so she could resign a few minutes before she were to be sworn in as Gov and pick her and end up picking her replacement.

It would probably be the second most likely pickup after Colorado, although it depends who the R candidate is.

She will 100% win, she consistently used to be the 2nd most popular Senator among the constituents after Bernie Sanders (though a little far from Bernie but still incredibly popular). And Maine should be an easy pick-up for the Dems if they nominate a decent candidate (with a good candidate for Presidency). Colorado also looks like an easy pick-up in 2020.

He's already running for Angus' seat.

He's already running for Angus' seat.

So if he wins (somehow), he nominates someone else like Poliquin.

If he loses (most likely) he appoints himself.

So this would basically make ME-GOV Safe R, but make the Democrats favored to pick up her Senate seat. I'm actually fine with this trade.

Especially since Collins would probably not be that bad of a Governor.

I'll happily vote for Collins for governor if that means I get a progressive senator. Troy Jackson please.

We can dream, hombre. While I probably wouldn't vote for Collins herself and rather the paper candidate Democrat they put up, I would be mostly okay with her as governor. I don't think I could deal with two years of Senator LePage though.

She was a Dem until 2014. I'm getting Cutler flashbacks.

She was nominated to her position by Republicans in the state legislature.

I honestly don't know much about her.
