"A US aircraft carrier-led strike group is headed toward the Western Pacific Ocean near the Korean Peninsula, a US defense official confirmed to CNN.

Adm. Harry Harris, the commander of U.S. Pacific Command, directed the USS Carl Vinson strike group to sail north to the Western Pacific after departing Singapore on Saturday, Pacific Command announced.

The move of the Vinson strike group is in response to recent North Korean provocations, the official said."

Aggressive posturing for now. This administration wants to stir up something someplace.

Policy agenda floundering? Approval rating tanking? Media critical of you? Investigations into potential connections to a hostile country? What better response than to turn everyone's attention to military aggression, which has almost always served to galvanize the American establishment and public behind you (temporarily)?

This is a yearly occurrence and completely normal.

Show of Force deployment only. They got their port call in Australia taken away to go back to Korean waters. Always hated that when I was in but it is what it is.

What role(s) did you serve in the USN, if it's not rude to ask?

Very cool. Thank you for your service, sir. The Navy is the branch of the military that has always fascinated me the most

This is our usual response to North Korea saber rattling. There won't be a war.

Eh, not so sure about that. There is no outcome for the NK problem without conflict imo. Kim won't leave, NK will still be NK, and China and the US can only push this for so long. China has said it's like a man in the middle of two rapidly approaching trains. I just hope if it comes to blows it will be a quick and massive blow to NK, otherwise SK and Japan are I'm for a rough ride with potential for radiation.
The outcome is eventual collapse. But if we didn't go to war when they literally bombarded South Korea with cannons like they did in '11, than we aren't going to war because of a rocket launch.

It is definitely hard to imagine war as likely as it could be. SK and US better make their strike quick enough so that the PRC just doesn't move in and assume control. China absorbing NK would still be a minor improvement.

I scared about what happens when Trump's lizard-brain starts to like the praise he's getting for bombing Syria.

We should worry about that with anyone in office.

The North Korean people are religiously brainwashed. It's unlike anything we've ever seen. I don't think a united Korea is going to be possible for decades, so the Chinese stepping in and slowly easing North Korea from juche hell to Laos style communism wouldn't be the worst thing to do in the interim. China is going to be going through their own collapse in this century, so their grip won't be permanent.

I dunno. Maybe. That's all I have to say about all of that.
