With Trey Gowdy on the case now, that really just shows how much of a nothingburger this is.

Nunes attracted a high profile challenger over the weekend (actor George Takei) and his district was 56-41 Trump. So I assume this move was to not take further fire and to avoid being a high profile liberal target as much as he could.

FYI as you might have missed it, but George Takei entering the race was an April Fool's joke.

Great, now can Adam "alu hat" Schiff step down too given that he is hysterically biased and can't be trusted?

Dems: "Russia/Trump"
Nunes: "No, evidence says no collusion"
Dems: "You can't reveal evidence! Step down"

See how this game is played?

It was likely to expose connections between associates of businessman Donald Trump and foreign agents and even mobsters. If you have no desire to be exposed for connections with them, then there is one sure way to avoid the consequences of such scrutiny: avoid the crooks and foreign agents. If they were staying at Trump hotels -- then tough luck. If they had been staying at Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, or Wyndham hotels -- or for that matter, Motel 6 or Super 8  --  then they might have drawn the attention of law enforcement. The Obama Administration was tough on crime.

Aren't we all told from childhood to stay clear of criminals and spies?

We have a monstrously-corrupt President and both Houses of Congress basically run by corporate lobbyists. With this President, any investigation can proceed only so long as it does not expose you-know-who.

Reminds me of when Sarah Palin resigned. "Ethics" complaints are often partisan, but Palin had no real reason to stand down. I think Nunes can't stand the heat. Fortunately the President is able to walk through hell with a gas can, to borrow a quote from The Colonel.

Was the timing intended to get this buried by the filibuster nuke?

Some interesting suggestions as to what might be the real reasons behind this stepping down by Nunes

i guess Nunes worked hard to prevent Yates' testimony so that she wouldn't spill the beans on the conspiracy against Trump...or something like that.

Nunes lost all credibility when he saw classified material in a White House SCIF, came out and did a huge media circus and ran back to the White House next day to "brief" the President on information which was shown to him by an administration appointee.

While the NSC could have officially handed over this information to the Intelligence committee and then Nunes could have made a statement to the same effect. Amateur Hour at the White House
