I wouldn't say that.  They are both socially liberal-moderate.  I think a better 1992 one would be Arkansas or West Virginia and Connecticut.

I wouldn't call Montana socially liberal per se.  It's socially non-inteventionalist, like it is economically, but Montanans are not progressive.  They're just libertarian.

It's hard to explain.

Yes, I agree, but it is not that different from New Jersey.  It's not one of the best differences from 1992.

West Virginia and Massachusetts are pretty good fits in several elections, I think. But perhaps Utah and New Hampshire in say 1988?

How about New Hampshire and West Virginia or Massachusetts and Utah?
