I wouldn't say that.  They are both socially liberal-moderate.  I think a better 1992 one would be Arkansas or West Virginia and Connecticut.

I wouldn't call Montana socially liberal per se.  It's socially non-inteventionalist, like it is economically, but Montanans are not progressive.  They're just libertarian.

It's hard to explain.

Yes, I agree, but it is not that different from New Jersey.  It's not one of the best differences from 1992.

West Virginia and Massachusetts are pretty good fits in several elections, I think. But perhaps Utah and New Hampshire in say 1988?

forgive me for going on a rant...

massachusetts isnt as 'liberal' as it is portrayed.  it is actually pretty damn authoritarian.  no alcohol sales on sunday.  ha!  liberal my ass.

now governor mitt has vetoed the emergency contraception bill.

i wish massachusetts would get back to liberalism.

How about . . . Massachusetts and Utah?

When? Since this thread's author defines 1980 as a landslide, he would likely call 1956 one as well, the last time they voted together (other than 1964 and 1984).

You like Massachusetts, and you don't think it's liberal enough.  So why are you a Republican?

Getting back on topic, I vote for Nevada and Utah.  Except for 1992 and 1996, both have voted Republican for the last few decades.  I find it funny that the state where slot machines are everywhere, prostitution is legal in the biggest city, and the alcohol and nicotine flow freely is next to the ultra-right-wing Mormon state where most adults don't even drink coffee, smoke, or drink alcoholic beverages.

The paradox: Nevada is closer to me politically, but my lifestyle would fit in better in Utah.  I rarely drink caffeine, I don't drink coffee, I think smoking is even more disgusting than oral sex, and even my drinking habits could pass for Mormon.  If you ignore my political views, my lack of a religious background, and the fact that polygamy seems creepy to me (OK, OK, it's been prohibited by the Mormon Church for a century), I look pretty good from a Mormon point of view.

I think he means traditional liberalism, as in, libertarianism.

California and Texas in 1988? That's the last time they voted together at all and barring a landslide, will be the last time for a while.

Hawaii and Maine (or many Northeatern states) from any of the past few or 1976?

Ford and Nixon 68' & 60' took a lot of the western states while their opponents took the eastern ones. Can't think of too many non similar ones off the top of my head right now.
