The debate IMO was a draw. Beto stood his ground but Cruz is an excellent and experienced debater. Regardless, this debate serves no purpose other than to increase Beto's name rec., and Beto knows that. No wonder Cruz didn't want many debates and wanted them on fall friday night's IIRC.

Good Point.... Friday Night Football is yuuge in Texas, even taking over local TV channels on many occasions....

One can not underestimate how distracted many Texans are not just with normal Friday Night activities, but additionally the added component of "what gets covered" on the local news....

Sure, Friday Night High School Football is big throughout the Country for parents of HS students, but in parts of Texas and the South, it becomes a sacred ritual....

Politics versus Football.... hmmm, "what would you rather watch?"

Anyone curious?Huh

Here are the current scores....

Anybody catch that Cook moved the race to a tossup today?

IMO that's a little bit premature.   O'Rourke has certainly been closing the gap, but I think Cruz still has to be considered at least a small favorite.  That could change before Election Day, though.

TBH Local debates tend not to matter unless they are carried by a national broadcaster, and even then they still don't move the electorate by 1% like the presidential debates. Very few people watch local debates. The only time they matter is if one candidate makes a major gaff or a resounding comeback that generates enough press and is on every state news channel the next day.

For example, even though I watched every 2016 Presidential debate but never a CA-Sen or NH-Sen (attending college in MA) debate. But I certainly know that Sanchez Dabbed and Ayotte flubbed the Trump issue, because those moments were everywhere the next day.

So...were there any extreme success's or stupid failures that the local press will go crazy over? Because if not, then the debate is a draw.

These ratings are full of bs. Only good rating was TX lean R and they changed it now so it isn't good anymore.

Yeah, that's a dumb move by Cook. As much as I'd like it to be, Texas is not a tossup.

Yep, I don’t think anyone “won” the debate in the traditional sense, but it has reminded me how scummy Ted Cruz is. His “socialist” quip is a great ad soundbite for Beto, and his MLK revisionism actually made me want to die.

I think because of the world we live today I don't think debates can be jockeyed like in years past. That being said I thought Beto did better than Cruz...

It's only a tossup if you think that Reuters is a more reliable pollster than Quinnipiac. They really should have Wasserman do the Senate (and Gov) ratings as well as the House.

In fairness Ted Cruz is definitely a more formidable opponent than Tucker Carlson.

Their faces are both just as punchable tho

Also, I feel like Lyin Ted's debate skills are overrated/over-hyped.

I haven't had the chance to sit down and watch this debate yet, but I just wanted to weigh in on this particular point. Sen. Cruz is an extremely good debater, at least in the mindset with which he approaches it - though this might not come out in how he speaks a lot. He's one of the top debaters in the history of the collegiate league that I compete on. That being said, college parli debate isn't the same as a political showcase, but our league focuses a lot on rhetorical and argumentative skills as opposed to the dry evidentiary skills present in a lot of other competitive school debate formats.

I wonder how close the lower house of the TX state legislature could get?  There is about a 5% GOP disadvantage in translating the statewide popular vote into seats in Texas, it's just never even been close in recent times.

Being ahead of the curve is not the same thing as jumping the gun. Hoping Atlas realizes this as the polls continue to support Cook's wise decision.

In particular, they have a history of being somewhat selective about which polls get added to their averages.  Overall, they seem to be very quick to add polls that favor R's, and are slow (or don't add at all) some polls that favor D's.
