I remain quite skeptical of this, despite all the usual suspects beginning to coalesce around this.

We had false "starts" of El Niņo in 2008, 2011, and 2012... all after La Niņa winters.  In the case of 2008 and 2011, La Niņa conditions returned during autumn and persisted throughout the next winter, and in 2012 neutral conditions returned and persisted from late 2012-late 2014.

This could be the same thing.

There is one case where you had an El Niņo/La Niņa/El Niņo quick succession... 1963-1966.  But that is the only one I can identify.

In any case, a sort of El Niņo of sorts is occurring as we speak, just not in the official region used to measure official El Niņo events.  Instead, this is occurring right along the coast of South America (where El Niņo was originally discovered).  It has disrupted weather patterns in Peru and has caused devastating flooding in areas that usually see almost no rain.  At the same time, in the region used to measure official El Niņo events, the water is slightly cooler than normal.
