NYC is great, also have family there which helps. East Tennessee seems like a middle class boredom hell hole.

There is a decent amount of wealth in the Knoxville area of East Tennessee.  The wealthiest county in the South (aka not the DC suburbs) is also in Tennessee, but in Middle Tennessee (Williamson County).  It's both the wealthiest county in the country (when adjusted for cost of living) and the most traditionally conservative county in the country, according to the Daily Caller.

Yep even worse, do you think that I can afford that shyte!

East TN.  Probably because I was born in WV and my country boy roots are showing.  Plus I hate big crowds and everything in NY is big crowds, even at 3 AM coming out of a bar.

East Tennessee is a nice place to visit. But to live there? You've got to be kidding.

I couldn't really see myself being happy in East Tennessee. The area is beautiful, no doubt about it. And I'm sure it has some wonderful people. But it's definitely not a culture in which I'd be happy, nor are even its big cities urban enough for my preferences. So I'll have to go with New York.

NYC (literally normal). Really wouldn't want to live in a place with fewer than 500k people, and preferrably much more than that.

I'm guessing this is supposed to compare the most traditionally Republican region of the country vs the most traditionally Democratic region of the country.

Yes.  NYC has voted Democratic in almost every presidential election, with a few exceptions.  Much of East TN has been solidly Republican since the Civil War, and the region was a Whig stronghold before that.

NYC for the sake of getting a job, but East Tennessee would be pretty close to paradise for retirement (I still would prefer the Bay Area if I could afford it, though).

East Tennessee, because I'm too poor for NYC and it's prettier.

This. Working in an affordable mid size city like Knoxville sounds nice.

New York City in a heartbeat. I would do particularly poorly in Southern socially conservative regions.

East Tennessee.

That region is dead gorgeous and the people are actually really friendly.  NYC is fun but there's too many people there. (Weirdo)

NYC, but East Tennessee is an awesome area.

I'll rank the boroughs and 5 areas in East Tennessee I'd like to live in:

1. Brooklyn
2. Staten Island
3. Knoxville
4. Queens
5. Sevierville
6. Chattanooga

7. Manhattan
8. Pigeon Forge
9. Johnson City

10. The Bronx

My wife and I are in our early sixties, and we have an 11 year old so, so East Tennessee is a no-brainer.

If money were no object, I'd rather live in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, however.  I'm a native New Yorker.

East Tennessee is prettier, and Knoxville’s enough of a city that I could live with it. I have a lot of family in east TN, and despite the political differences it’s people that I like and a culture that I appreciate. Plus, I could actually afford to live there.
