Wow,  the Republicans might actually have a 3rd moderate in their Senate caucus???   That's crazy, I thought only hardcore conservatives were allowed in nowadays.

Just wondering, what was Hatch looking like before November? Is this solely caused by Trump or was Hatch already in trouble?

One more reason to really invest in the 2018 Senate cycle and to get way more than 50 Senators to not allow the RINOS like McCain, Graham, Huntsman and Flake to slow down the agenda. These crazy guys would trade a million jobs to get a bit influence on the other side of the world...

I know Huntsman did his entire 2012 run on the whole 'I served my country' shtick moderates/liberals shouldn't be cheering him into the Senate- he did back Trump whilst many other (and much more conservative republicans) opposed Trump.

lets not get too crazy - Huntsman will probably be a moderate along the lines of Susan Collins, who votes with the administration on any important vote anyways.

Trump supporters probably shouldn't complain about Huntsman - he was a pretty early supporter in contrast to his opponent for king of Mormons Mitt Romney.

Yeah, no. We want McMullin, or someone along his lines (most of Utah's current statewide officials would be fine, honestly), someone who would advocate an explicitly anti-Trump, pro-globalist conservatism, not a cuck moderate like Huntsman who would consider supporting Trump.

Frick, I'd probably vote to keep useless Hatch in over Huntsman.

Anyone is better than McMullin, I guess. Still, Hatch isn't bad and the fact that Wulfric and other Democrats are supporting Huntsman worries me.

My support of Huntsman shouldn't shock you. Centrists like him and Tester are exactly my preferred type of politician. And I don't care that Huntsman endorsed Trump - It was simply his duty as a republican, not a reflection of his character or views.

for the record I'd love Huntsman v. McMullin v. some wacky 3rd party Trump conservative v. Some nominally acceptable Democrat who scores about 30% or so.

The way Huntsman sycophantically criticized, endorsed, unendorsed, and endorsed in order to get that sweet SOS position really put me off.

It shows that he struggled with his decision to endorse Trump. As it was his duty to the party, he did endorse Trump for good eventually, but he made clear that he didn't like it. I see hesitance towards Trump as a plus, not a minus, So it just makes me even more enthusiastic towards him.

Anything to make politics more interesting. Huntsman is awful though, and not really a moderate.

Roughest thing this result is that Hatch has positive job approval, 51-47, meaning a decent chunk of the people who like Hatch still think he should go.

If Hatch runs without primary opposition, he'll cruise to reelection.  If Huntsman or McMullin runs, then he should retire.

Yep, because when you make a promise to retire (as Hatch did), it's not cool to break it.

In Nov 2018 he'll be 84 years old...he should retire regardless.

-[Retch.] [Retch.] [Retch.]

Even though I endorsed his Democratic opponent in 2016 (just because I hated his willful sabotage of the Republican Party), a Lee-McMullin race would make me instantly support electing Mike Lee as Senator for Life.
