I am in solid belief that this is a solid idea.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I served as Governor and as an Assemblyman for the former Northeast Region, and was confused about the name and land changes that were made during my hiatus from public service, so I'm not sure how I feel about yet another name change.

As an experiment, I'd like to see some possible name suggestions if anyone has any?

The committee that drafted the Northern Constitution considered naming the region "Franklin," at my suggestion, but ultimately decided against it. I know Evergreen had proposed "Union" as a possible name (presumably as a reference to the American Civil War), and Kingpoleon suggested "Union of Franklin" as a compromise.

To the issue of confusing citizens: Fremont managed to adopt a unique (i.e. non-cardinal) name without it resulting in mass chaos, and the South has gone by different names in the past. Frankly, I think the current name is more confusing, as it's so similar to the name of the former Northeast, and states that would be considered Northern IRL (DE, IA, MD, MN) are part of other regions.

Lots of names I(RC) came up with, not all of them serious:

Minypa
Welland
The Eastern Seaboard
Atlantic
Metro
New York and Friends
Why Isn't Minnesota Here
New Canada

I could support this effort, as it gets citizens involved via ballot measure in naming our great Region.  It's little things like this that could stimulate activity, which is a priority for all of us.  A customized, non-cardinal name could have more charm than a more generic cardinal name.

Nickname ideas that I would contribute would include Lincoln and Mason.  Though the latter would work better if we can convince our Southern friends to rename their region Dixon. Cheesy

Right now, the SCTF's going with Jefferson. Of course, if you guys go with Mason, I'll see what I can do to make it Dixon.

Atlantic and Union are my two favorites. I'd like to informally propose the Atlantic Union Region.

Let's get back to debating this, because I'm still on the fence about the idea as a whole. Other than our proposed names (some of which are pretty interesting) do we feel that we should even change the name of the region to begin with?

Personally, I'm partial to either Lincoln or Franklin for the new name.  "North" has got to go, though.  I thought it was a lame proposal when the constitution was written up and I still do.

I can understand the concerns that the Speaker/Lt. Gov has around this bill, however overall I believe that the implementation wouldn't be too problematic.  And as I said, it would stimulate activity in the region.  I'm willing to support the effort.

Seeing that my colleagues in the Assembly as well as the Governor and Senator Scott believe this is a good idea, and given that I trust all of their judgement, I believe I can support this measure.

I'm moving to end the voting period because all members have voted. The bill has passed. I will open the thread for new regional name suggestions.

Bump

According to this law, now that the thread is closed all Northern officeholders will decide what names to appear on the ballot.

Here's what the citizens of the region proposed:

Adams
Atlantic
Atlantic Union
Black Hawk
Dominion
Eastern Seaboard
Erie
Franklin
Great Lakes
Huron
Jefferson
Lincoln
Mason
Metro
Minypa
New America
New Canada
New England and Rust
New York and Friends*
Northern Kingdom
Northia
Patakistan*
Sawxistan*
St. Lawrence
Superior
Tecumseh
Welland
Why Isn't Minnesota Here*
Winterfell

* = Presumably jokes

We can do this one of two ways. We can either suggest our three favorite names each and then aggregate based on that, or we can each suggest our favorite name, and put those three on the ballot.

I'd be in favor of a three name shortlist per person, then we can further narrow down from there.

Alright, we'll give the Assembly members 72 hours to pick three names, and then we'll aggregate the most popular names and/or vote on the names if ties arise.

My three top choices are:

Atlantic Union
Franklin
Jefferson

In my premise of citizen involvement, I'd like to also make a few suggestions based on what had the support of more than one citizen in the original thread.

Lincoln (endorsed by 5)
Huron (endorsed by 2, criticized by 1)
Franklin (endorsed by 5)
Atlantic, Union, Atlantic Union (endorsed by 3, criticized by 1)
Superior (endorsed by 2, criticized by 1)
Erie (endorsed by 3, criticized by 1)
Winterfell (endorsed by 2)

Any generic show of support was considered an endorsement. Any generic show of disagreement was counted as a criticism. Correct me if I miscounted, but I think this gives some idea of what the citizens want and not just the Assembly, which is what I'm going for with this bill.

Names supported by Assembly members that aren't on that list:
Mason

Names on that list that aren't supported by Assembly members:
Huron
Erie
Winterfell

The Assembly has done a decent job representing the people's opinion here, but it's not too late to change your votes.
