Let me suggest that your categorizations is a little oversimplified.

The best categorization I have every seen of Senators divided them into three categories: (1) media whores, (2) party officials and (3) subject matter experts.

The media whores contribute nothing of lasting value, and merely romp around the public stage making spectacles of themselves (McCain is the archetype).

Party officials spend their time organizing efforts to implement broad policies (a job frequently as difficult as herding cats).

The subject matter experts are responsible for actually making things work.  You read or hear about them much in the media.

Just curious: why exactly? I haven't met him or had any interaction whatsoever with him.

Now Domenici is a Class Act, no doubt about it. Way back in early 2000, fresh out of college, I sent the usual resumes/letters of interest to my Reps and Senators looking for work. While I got no work from any of them, Domenici's office was the only one to send me a rather nice letter saying that they didn't have anything for me at the moment but that they were glad I had asked, liked what they saw, and to try again in the future (although I got an actual job a few weeks later as it turned out). It was a nice gesture.

No, I'm not voting yet - I'm waiting for King's reply. And reasons for why people vote would be nice, since I don't know most of these people by reputation...
