In a general election, primary/caucus, or both.

I'll start with Montana.

General: For a relatively typical liberal Dem like yourself, you'll need an extremely unpopular Republican incumbent with a failed war record, along with a strong Libertarian candidate in the mold of Ron Paul.

He'd need to be scandal free, really get minority outreach going and run against someone like Donald Trump.

You could win Arizona by pumping up Hispanic turnout and have a good Hispanic outreach program along with pumping out college turnout and turnout amongst the LBGTQ community.

General: You'd need a large, continuous GOTV effort, and it would probably help if your opponent was unpopular.

Primary: If your Democratic opponent was even further to the left than you, you'd very likely win it.

If he ran as a Republican, he'd only lose it to (primaries) Sandoval, Heller, or a Mormon. In the general, he'd only lose it to CCM or a Hispanic who won the PV nationally by at least 2%.

General: If you ran against a corporatist Democrat who was seen as an elitist and part of the establishment, you'd stand a good chance.

Primary: You'd win against a Trump-like Republican in Minnesota.

West Virginia Tongue (remember that you can also discuss primaries, and don't necessarily have to talk about a general election)

In the primary, he may likely win but perhaps a yokel or creepy coal miner could win.

In the general, it would be extremely tough. But Democrats seem to have some pulse statewide.

For me, use MO.

Run on David Duke's platform minus the white separatist rhetoric/Holocaust quasi-denial.

Unpopular Republican incumbent with an evangelical bent. Also, if Jon Tester, Steve Bullock or Brian Schweitzer was his VP.

Primary: He would lose it to someone more moderate unless he got major endorsements there. Kalwejt could also beat, say, Klobuchar or Bullock.
General: He would win it against all but the most liberal Republicans(RINO Tom or Brian Sandoval).

Since Puerto Rico only votes in the primaries right now, I suppose you'd win it against a very conservative Republican.

Running on a populist message leaving environmental issues at bay. Republican is Mitt Romney on steroids/Donald Trump without the campaign skills. A corrupt big-city millionaire who makes his contempt for the working class known. Right before the election, the Republican is found to have taken a massive bribe from some company/person who is unpopular particularly in Alaska. Maybe also something about a turnout effort among Native Americans in rural Alaska to push him over the edge.
