It should be outlawed as racial discrimination. Class is the true measure of "privilege".

The idea that education is a limited quantity is stupid. Just guarantee everyone who wants it a college education and it won't be an issue.

I think that we have to address the achievement gap, but affirmative action (at this point, at least) isn't the right way to do it.

No, all affirmative action programs should be based on income not race.

Affirmative Action (on a non-income basis) should be temporary otherwise you end up helping exclusively middle-class layers of the disadvantagedged group. It leads to the shambolicness of caste politics in India.

The election of Trump seems to be a talking point that points to its need but that only seems to create more racism. Policies should stay around closing the acheivement gap without forcing people to lose their identity.

This.  There was a time when strictly race-based made sense ... even affluent Blacks in relatively tolerant areas faced challenges that poor Whites didn't.  I'm not so sure that's the case anymore.

And what CrabCake said.

Lean no, but I appreciate the sentiment behind AA programs. I think a multitude of factors should play a role in college admissions, but as others have already mentioned, I prefer income-based programs over race-based ones.

This, since I do support the status quo for income-based grants. It is unfair that my brother's black roommates got more aid than him when their parents were all richer than ours.

Absolutely not. I have a theory that these programs are actually racist policies designed to hold back African Americans in favor of wealthier students of Asian descent.

No.  I favor income- and disability-based affirmative action, and if minorities are more likely to be poor, an income-based approach could indirectly increase diversity, but race per se should not be a factor.

Under the current racial and ethnic classifications in the US, a privileged white Spaniard (like snowstalker) would get preferential treatment over a Cambodian or Hmong refugee, so obviously it's not fair to Asians.

Income is a pretty terrible metric to utilize to be completely honest. I would by-far prefer simply race-based policies.

The point is to get inclusiveness of certain groups in positions of decision-making power, so that the opportunities can arise naturally. The thread is too focused on the results of the individual, which is really not the problem we face.

When I say "Asian" I'm mainly referring to the Indian-American counterparts of Snowstalker who are the children of Ivy League educated doctors. One of my best friends from Middle School fell into a clique of kids in High School that was literally this specific archetype of the Asian-American demographic. They really annoyed me the last time I had the misfortune of hanging out with all of them, because I ended up being their chauffeur when I was invited to join them for bowling and I got to hear long diatribes against the Haitian kids at their school. The conversation was marked with dog-whistles that they could've stolen straight out of an AP American History textbook.

I don't disagree with the point you made at all, though.

Thomas Sowell made some quip about how it was the best thing ever for black kids... from Beverley Hills and Pacific Palisades Tongue

It depends on the circumstance and the affirmative action program. In some cases I do.
